Praxis Certification Assessment

In Tennessee, becoming a certified educator generally requires passing the Praxis Core Basic Skills for Educators (for undergraduate seeking admissions to the program) and the relevant Praxis Subject Assessment for your specific endorsement in the field.  Requirements are set by the TN State Board of Education, with passing scores varying by test, and you'll need to check TN.gov's official site for exact needs for your endorsement.

Key Praxis Tests for Tennessee Educators:
  1. Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (Core): Measures basic reading, writing, and math skills; used for entry into teacher prep programs, not licensure, with ACT (21) or SAT (1080) composite score exemptions available.
  2. Praxis Subject Assessments: Tests your content knowledge in your specific endorsementt (e.g., Early Childhood, Instructional Leadership, Music.

How They Fit Together:
  • Program Entry: You might take Praxis Core to get into a program.
  • Licensure: To get your K-12 initial practitioner license, you must pass the Subject Assessment(s) for your endorsement.
Finding Your Specific Requirements:
  • Go to the official ETS Praxis page for Tennessee or TN.gov's education page.
  • Look for the "Professional Assessments for Tennessee Educators" to see what's required for your specific license and endorsements.
