Educational Objectives

Civil Engineering (BS-CE):
Civil engineers plan, design, construct, operate and maintain public infrastructures such as buildings, bridges, dams, airports, power facilities, treatment systems, water supply, and transportation systems. The Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) are:

  • Knowledge of physical sciences, mathematics, and engineering sciences to delineate and solve civil engineering problems using a systematic scientific approach.
  • Ability to pursue graduate education in civil engineering and related fields.
  • Ability to function as members of multidisciplinary and multicultural teams, and to communicate effectively using available modern tools.

Program Outcomes for the Program

The outcomes of the programs require that the student upon graduation demonstrate the following:

  1. an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering

  2. an ability to design and conduct experiments as well as to analyze and interpret data

  3. an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs

  4. an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams

  5. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems

  6. an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility

  7. an ability to communicate effectively

  8. the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context

  9. a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in, lifelong learning

  10. a knowledge of contemporary issues

  11. an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice

  12. an ability to apply knowledge in environmental engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, and water resource management

  13. an ability to explain basic concepts in management, business, public policy and leadership.

  14. an ability to explain the importance of professional licensure

Architectural Engineering (BS-AE):
Architectural engineers plan, design, construct, and maintain buildings. They design and construct the structural systems, the heating and air conditioning systems, the lighting and electrical systems, and the plumbing and fire protection systems for buildings, along with construction management. Architectural engineers engage in building and community sustainability practices. They facilitate maintenance and renovations of existing buildings. Four specializations in the Architectural Engineering program are Structures, Mechanical (HVAC)/Electrical/Lighting, Construction and Facilities Management. The Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) are:

  • Knowledge of physical sciences, mathematics, and engineering sciences to delineate and solve architectural engineering problems using a systematic scientific approach.
  • Ability to pursue graduate education in architectural engineering and related fields.
  • Ability to function as members of multidisciplinary and multicultural teams, and to communicate effectively using available modern tools.
