The Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering at Tennessee State University will be regionally known as a prominent academic leader in educating a diverse student population to become designers, researchers, managers and leaders for a sustainable world. Mission Statement

The Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering at Tennessee State University thrives to provide students with a supportive learning environment, hands-on experiential opportunities, and a culture of scholarship and research. The department enables students to develop careers to become successful technical and design managers and leaders. The department also prepares the students to become life-long learners, skillful communicators, and effective practitioners, and leaders in a global community.

The programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and Architectural Engineering degree are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org.

Educational Objectives

Civil Engineering (BS-CE):
Civil engineers plan, design, construct, operate and maintain public infrastructures such as buildings, bridges, dams, airports, power facilities, treatment systems, water supply, and transportation systems. The Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) are:

  • Graduates will meet the expectations of employers of Civil Engineers.
  • Graduates will continue their professional development through graduate study if qualified or continuing education.

Architectural Engineering (BS-AE):
Architectural engineers plan, design, construct, and maintain buildings. They design and construct the structural systems, the heating and air conditioning systems, the lighting and electrical systems, and the plumbing and fire protection systems for buildings, along with construction management. Architectural engineers engage in building and community sustainability practices. They facilitate maintenance and renovations of existing buildings. Four specializations in the Architectural Engineering program are Structures, Mechanical (HVAC)/Electrical/Lighting, Construction and Facilities Management. The Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) are:

  • Graduates will meet the expectations of employers of Architectural Engineers.
  • Graduates will continue their professional development through graduate study if qualified or continuing education.

Program Outcomes for the Department

The outcomes of the programs require that the graduate student demonstrate the following:

CIVIL ENGINEERING

The Civil Engineering Program includes the planning, designing, construction, and maintenance of structures and altering geography to suit human needs. Some of the numerous subdivisions are transportation (eg, railroad facilities and highways); hydraulics (eg, river control, irrigation, swamp draining, water supply, and sewage disposal); and structures (eg, buildings, bridges, and tunnels). ARCHITECTURAL ENGINEERING

Architectural Engineering deals with all engineering aspects of building performance, integrated with the building's architectural requirements. Architectural engineering students study all engineering aspects of building performance systems including structural systems design, heating ventilation and air conditioning design, electrical and power design, and construction and project management.
