CONCENTRATIONS: Secondary School Instruction


The Secondary School Instruction concentration within the M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction is an initial licensure program designed for advanced candidates pursuing careers in secondary education. This program prepares teachers to instruct single-subject areas in grades 6–12 as well as K–12 subjects requiring specialized certification, providing the knowledge and skills needed to effectively teach and inspire adolescent learners.

Admission Requirements

Admission to teacher education programs at the graduate level requires a 2.75 GPA or higher on the last earned degree. Additional evidence of academic performance may be required (other test scores). Applicants who are seeking initial teaching license should contact the Office of Teacher Education and Student Services for current requirements.

Licensure Option Degree Requirements

Secondary School Instruction candidatesmust complete the 33-credit hours of course work plus 12-credit hours in the semester of student teaching for a total of 45-credit hours, submit the edTPA portfolio, meet the State Department of Education’s minimum passing edTPA score (open link for score details), and pass the comprehensive exams and pass all required Praxis subject area exams.

Overview of Coursework
The  general core courses, totaling fifteen (15) semester hours, are listed below:

  • EDCI 5000 - Foundations of Education (3)  OR
  • EDCI 5260 - Philosophy of Education (3) 
  • EDCI 5110 - Research and Statistics in Education (3) 
  • EDCI 5300 - Multicultural Education (3)
  • EDCI 6100 - Curriculum Planning and Programming (3) 
  • PSYC 5430 - Advanced Educational Psychology (3) 

The concentration courses, totaling twelve (12) semester hours, are listed below: 

  • EDCI 5190 - Technology Integration in the Instructional Setting (3) 
  • EDSE 5530 - Education and Psychology of Exceptional Children (3)
  • EDCI 5840 - Classroom Management: Creating A Community of Learners (3) 
  • PSYC 5330 - Measurement and Evaluation for the Classroom (3) 

The licensure courses, totaling six (6) credit hours, are listed below. Candidates must be admitted to the Teacher Education program to enroll in these courses. 

  • EDCI 5715 - Advanced Methods of Teaching For Secondary Teachers (3)
  • EDLI 6050 - Strategies for Developing Reading/Study Skills in Middle and Secondary Schools (3)

Student Teaching for Initial Licensure: 12-credit hours beyond coursework: 

  • EDCI 4705 - Educational Seminar (3)
  • EDCI 4720 - Student Teaching in the Elementary School (9)


Note

Candidates must pass the comprehensive exams and pass all required Praxis subject area exams. Additionally, candidates are required to complete a residency field experience (student teaching) in a middle or secondary school setting.
*The master’s degree cannot be awarded until licensure requirements are fulfilled.
