Promoting Scholarly Research

Tennessee State University is designated by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education as a R2: Doctoral Institution – High Research Activity. The university engages in cutting-edge research to address critical challenges in our society. Our research arm supports faculty and students by taking their ideas from conception to fruition in critical areas such as agricultural sciences, engineering, biotechnology, nanomaterials, health sciences, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, astrophysics, business and the social sciences.

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs works to enable our research community, through support and development, to achieve research goals through external funding.

 


TSU REACHES OVER $100 MILLION IN RESEARCH AWARDS

Tennessee State University reached a historic milestone in 2023, with the institution receiving over $100 million in research awards keeping us at the top among the nation's highest awarded HBCUs. The record-setting $100,031,082 million in funding awards are a part of the University’s plan to reach R1- research status.

Now Accepting FacultyGrant Applications

In 2021, TMCF and the Novartis US Foundation established a 10-year alliance to address educational and health inequities for the Black/African-American community, with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Historically Black Medical Schools at the center. This solutions-focused program seeks to achieve a paradigm shift over time, via a variety of strategies, to address long-standing, endemic, and historically based disparities.
