Bio-Remediation

The use of biological agents, such as bacteria or plants, to remove or neutralize contaminants, as in polluted soil or water is termed as bio-remediation.

Students at Tennessee State University have completed several laboratory and field studies using bacteria to clean fuels and solvents in ground water in the southeast region of the United States.

Phytoremediation

Phytoremediation refers to the use of plants to remediate contaminated soils. Tennessee State University researchers are developing more effecient methods to clean soils contaminated with metals and pesticides.

Design of waste water systems

The design of waste water systems involves the application of physical and biological processes to remove organic and inorganic matter from solution. Fluid flow and hydraulics play an important role in the sizing and configuration of waste water treatment systems.

Potential for bioremediation of organic contaminants in karst aquifers
