Becoming Oriented

First Day or Prior

(with Department Chair and/or assigned staff)

  1. Sign work contract and fill out payroll paperwork: Human Resources, General Services Building - Heiman St
  2. Complete benefits paperwork (within 30 days)
  3. Obtain TSU photo ID: Hankal Hall, Rm 102
  4. Set up email account/Banner login, etc. - Details
  5. Obtain permanent parking permit: on Banner Services - TSU Parking System
  6. Receive office/lab assignment
  7. Receive keys for building/office
  8. Tour of college/department facilities
  9. Tour of campus facilities; Locate Your Building on this campus building map.
  10. Meet key department and college personnel (office assistants, Deans of College)
  11. Complete New Hire Orientation

First Week

  1. Provide Department's Administrative Assistant with list of office needs (computer, software, printer, pens, pencils, paper, organizers, etc.)
  2. Set up library access
  3. Apply for graduate faculty status
  4. Discuss teaching responsibilities/assignment with Department Chair
  5. Discuss Tenure/Promotion policy with Department Chair
  6. Meet with Dean of Extension or Research to discuss Evans-Allen/Extension proposal requirements
  7. Fill out mentoring questionnaire

First Month

  1. Work on course syllabi and lectures/labs
  2. Sign up for training opportunities through university
  3. Complete Equal Opportunity Trainings
  4. Introduce yourself to faculty/make contact with potential collaborators
  5. Collect information on potential sources of funding, publication outlets
  6. Determine program needs (equipment, supplies, etc.) and identify sources of funding (department, college, grants)
  7. Meet with faculty Mentor to discuss mentoring plan and questionnaire, teaching, research and Tenure and Promotion questions and concerns

Second Month - End of First Semester

  1. Receive teaching evaluation/feedback from senior faculty/chair
  2. Reach out to state and regional commodity groups in your field to assess research/extension needs
  3. Write Evans-Allen or Extension proposal
  4. Revise first draft of Evans-Allen or Extension proposal with Mentor
  5. Submit complete proposal to Dean of Research or Extension
  6. Provide Department Chair and Dean's Office with list of research lab needs
