Derien Rivers

Growing up in Memphis, Tenn., Derien Rivers knew he wanted to walk in the footsteps of those who came before him when it came time to attend college. When his grandfather passed, he decided to honor him and his beloved alma mater.

“My grandfather loved this institution and I decided to honor his memory and walk in his footsteps of greatness,” said Rivers. “I have not regretted that decision.”

Since he has been at TSU, he has honored the memory of his grandfather and excelled in his academic field of study. Rivers has been on every Deans’ List for the past three years, and a member of the Psi Chi Psychology Honor Society, the Golden Key Honor Society, University Honors Council, and the Student Union Board of Governors.

His greatest achievement was being accepted into the psychology Ph.D. program at UCLA.

“I interned at the University of California–Los Angeles where I had the opportunity to work in the multiple sclerosis lab and conduct research. After that summer research experience, they offered me a full ride to continue my education. That would not have been possible without the wonderful support I received from faculty here at TSU. They care about you excelling academically as well as personally," he said.

Before leaving for Memphis, Rivers' parents parting words were to remember what he was here for…an education…and to make them proud. He feels he has made both his parents and his grandfather very proud.
