Dr. Soumen N. Ghosh is currently the Department Head of Economics and Finance department at Tennessee State University (TSU). He has been serving the department of Economics and Finance at Tennessee State University since 2007. Prior to his taking the helm of the department of Economics and Finance Dr. Ghosh served TSU as the Director of its Office of Business and Economic Research (OBER) from Fall’ 2001 – Summer 2007.  Prior to coming to TSU, Dr. Ghosh has served New Mexico State University (NMSU) as an associate professor of economics. He has served the College of Business Administration & Economics at New Mexico State since 1987.  Dr. Ghosh teaches graduate level quantitative methods, managerial economics, environmental economics, economic development and mathematical economics courses. His primary focus of research is in the area of urban economics, environmental economics, water resources, renewable energy development, and economic development. Dr. Ghosh has been consulting with numerous International and domestic agencies including the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, USAID, USEPA, Homeland Security Office, and  private firms.

Dr. Melvin N. Johnson began his tenure as the seventh president of Tennessee State University (TSU) on June 1, 2005 and retired from the presidency in 2011.  Subsequent to his arrival at TSU Dr. Johnson served as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Winston-Salem State University. Prior to that appointment, he served in senior academic roles at North Carolina A&T State University, and taught economics at the U.S. Air Force Academy where he completed his distinguished military career as a Lieutenant Colonel. Dr. Johnson received his undergraduate degree in economics from North Carolina A&T and earned a Master of Arts in Economics from Ball State University. He received his M.B.A. and D.B.A. from Indiana University. He also completed postdoctoral studies at the Institute for Education Management, Institute for Management and Leadership in Education, and the New Presidents Seminar at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Cambridge.  Nationally, Johnson serves on the Educational Testing Service Board of Trustees, Princeton, New Jersey, whose aim is to close the achievement gap and he also served on the NCAA Committee on Academic Performance. Locally, Dr, Johnson's board appointments include: The Frist Center for the Visual Arts Board of Trustees and Chair of the Education Committee. He is passionate about sharing his love of economics and public policy and global experiences with students.

Nelson C. Modeste is Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics and Finance.  Dr. Modeste holds a B.S. in Economics from Tuskegee Institute, and a M.A., and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Florida.  Dr. Modeste has published several papers in the general   area of international economics and economic development. These papers have appeared in publications, such as, The Journal of Money,Credit,and Banking; and the Journal of Developing Areas, among others. At TSU, Dr. Modeste has taught courses in statistics, principles of economics, and intermediate macroeconomics.

Dr. Dharmendra Dhakal is a Professor of Finance in the Department of Economics and Finance at Tennessee State University.  He received his Ph.D. in Economics from Southern Illinois University in 1991 and Post Doc in Finance from Virginia Tech University in 2008. He has taught other Universities prior to joining TSU.  Dr. Dhakal’s current research areas are International Finance, international economics, and corporate Finance.  He has published about thirty journal articles in academic journals including Economic Letters, Applied Economics, The Quarterly Review of Economics and Finance, International Journal of Social Economics, Economia Internazionale among others.  Dr. Dhakal is a winner of several Awards (research and Teaching). Recently he received an Outstanding Graduate Faculty in the College of Business for 2012-2013.

Abu N. M. Wahid is a professor in the department of economics and finance at Tennessee State University. He is the editor of the Journal of Developing Areas, a journal of international repute since 1966. Over the last several years, he has published SIX books as author, editor, and co-editor. His book (Ed) Frontiers of Economics: Nobel Laureates of the Twentieth Century, published by Greenwood Press of America is acquired by many major libraries around the world. His first book (Ed) The Grameen Bank: Poverty Relief in Bangladesh is widely cited and was used as text on microlending at Hartwick College of New York. In addition, he has made about sixty publications in the form of refereed journal articles and book chapters. Professor Wahid successfully negotiated the terms and conditions of an academic exchange agreement between Tennessee State University and Darul Ihsan University of Bangladesh in the late 1990s. He spent the summer of 1997 in Bangladesh as a Fulbright scholar. He received research grants from the Japan Foundation, American Institute of Bangladesh Studies, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, Eastern Illinois University and Tennessee State University. He is the recipient of faculty excellence awards for research from Tennessee State University, Eastern Illinois University, and the College of Business at Tennessee State University. He has delivered  invited lectures at the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey; The University of Pretoria, South Africa; University of Castilla-La Mancha, Spain; Deakin and Wollongong Universities, Australia; University of Thessally, Greece; Institut National de Demographiques, France; and Strathclyde University of Scotland, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, National Graduate Institute of Policy Studies and Nanzan University, Japan, Tamkang University and Cheng Kung National University,Taiwan. He visited Malawi and Tunisia in connection with collaborative research projects between TSU and its foreign counterparts in 2002. He gave seminars at the Southeast University and North South University of Bangladesh and a Keynote/Plenary addresses at Terenggunau Technical University in November 26-28, in 2008,  in Malaysia, Universidad De Zamboanga, Zamboanga City, the Philippines, October 5-7 in 2009,  and at Shih Chien University, Taipei, Taiwan, on June 11, 2010. He organized a one day international workshop on development at the University of Venice, Italy.  He examined more than a dozen Ph.D. dissertations as external examiner for the universities of Australia, South Africa, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

 Dr. Achintya Ray is an Associate Professor of Economics and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Developing Areas (Project Muse, Johns Hopkins University). Dr. Ray earned his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Economics from Vanderbilt University. His research interests are in Industrial Organization, Health Economics and Development Economics. Dr. Ray has published his research in many internationally reputed peer reviewed journals like the Manchester School, Journal of Economics, Economics of Innovation and New Technology, Economics Bulletin etc. Dr. Ray has provided his services as a peer reviewer to many leading international journals including American Journal of Preventive Medicine, American Journal of Public Health, Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, Manchester School, Applied Economics, Applied Financial Economics, British Medical Journal, Economics and Human Biology, Social Science and Medicine, and Bulletin of the World Health Organization. He is a noted columnist whose op-eds have been published by leading dailies around the world. He has presented invited talks at many internationally reputed institutions including the World Institute of Development Economics Research of the United Nations University, The George Washington University, Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, University of Waterloo, Whittier College, and Indian Institute of Management. Dr. Ray has served as expert examiner of doctoral dissertations of many reputed international universities.

Dr. Chun-Da Chen

Dr. Chun-Da Chen currently is an Associate Professor and has taught TSU students Business Finance and Managerial Finance since 2007. He holds a doctorate in Finance from Tamkang University and Tamkang University is one of the first-tier private universities in Taiwan. After obtaining his Ph.D. degree, he further teach many lower- and upper-level Finance courses, including Business Finance, Corporate Finance, Investment Theory (Undergraduate), Managerial Finance, Portfolio Management, Futures and Options (Graduate), and International Finance (Ph.D. Program).  He is also the editorial advisory board member and associate editor for the Open Economics Journal, Contemporary Management Research, etc. He has published numbers of research papers in high quality refereed academic journals, including International Review of Economics and Finance, International Review of Financial Analysis, Applied Economics, Applied Economics Letters, Emerging Markets Finance and Trade, and Journal of Developing Areas, and have made presentations to the annual meetings of the major Finance Associations.  Dr. Chen’s recent research interests are in herding behaviors, market efficiency, econometric model, and risk management.  In past years, he also has been awarded several grants totaling about $60,000.
