Program Overview

MS in DS

What is Data Science?

Data science deals with development of computational foundation, methods, and tools to analyze large data sets in order to draw insights and to extract information. The growing data deluge from multiple sources require skilled data scientists to extract meaning and actionable intelligence from these data sets. Data science applications are everywhere, seen in machine learning, and creating visualizations of high dimensional data. The MS in DS Program at TSU will give students a thorough grounding in computer science, mathematics and statistics in order for students to successfully navigate the world of big data.

Why MS in Data Science at TSU?

Th MS in Data Science at TSU is a two-year program that offers an advanced degree in highly demanded fields of Data Science – e.g. Artificial Intelligence (more specifically Machine Learning), Data Visualization, Relational and Hybrid databases, and Statistics.

It is designed to be open for all majors who have an academic background that covers certain prerequisite knowledge in mathematics and computer programming. Mathematical Background: (1) Calculus I or equivalent and (2) Probability and Statistics or Linear Algebra or equivalent. Computer Science Background: One semester of computer programming.

Tennessee State University already offers a number of courses in various areas of data sciences such as Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Hybrid and Relational Databases, Computer Vision, Distributed Algorithms, and Bioinformatics. It comes the time to establishing a new program so that the students can receive complete, consistent and well-structured knowledge, expertise, and experience in Data Science.  Tennessee State University, as a state institution, provides a unique service to the community with an affordable Master of Science program in Data Science.
