DANCE MINOR PROGRAM
The minor in dance is administered by the Department of Communications within the Theater and Dance Program. Students in any major field may minor in dance with the approval of the coordinator of the dance minor program and the department chairperson of Communications.
The purpose of the Dance Track Program is to provide a vigorous and comprehensive undergraduate education in theater and dance based on core requirements, which lead students to specialized creative work in the profession, to graduate work in preparation for teaching, performance, and research, or to other careers within or beyond the arts and entertainment industry. The program requires its students to build on a broad based liberal arts education that promotes the development of student’s knowledge and values for an increasingly complex, diverse and interdependent global village. The Dance Minor Program is designed to prepare students for a career in performance or choreography in a variety of professional situations. The Dance Minor Program, serve two main Tracks/groups of students, which are students in The Dance Performance Track and The Choreography Track. The Performance Track will prepare the student professionally within the rigorous demands of concentrated rehearsals and numerous performing experiences. The Choreography Track will enable the student to create works for concerts or workshops as well as the professional world of theater. There are two groups of course work that must be taken and they are Dance Technique Courses and Dance Lecture/Performance Courses. Students should consult with the theater coordinator to structure an academic program that will provide a broad understanding of the basic principles of the academic program. Consultation is important for all majors, so that the suggested program plan may be tailored to the student’s particular needs and interests.
