The purpose of the undergraduate program in the Department of Human Sciences is to prepare students to help individuals and families to make informed decisions about their well-being, relationships, resources, and quality of life.  The Family and Consumer Sciences Major recognizes the significance of the interests and well-being of individuals, families, and communities.  The program includes the study of food and nutrition, health, clothing and textiles, management of resources, care and guidance of children, human growth and development throughout the life span, interpersonal relationships, and family relationships.

The underlying focus is on an integrative approach to relationships among individuals, families, and communities and the environments in which they function. This program seeks to:

  • Empower individuals
  • Strengthen families
  • Enable communities.

The Department of Human Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Family and Consumer Sciences with concentrations in:

The Mission of the Department of Human Sciences

The mission of the Department of Human Sciences is to prepare individuals for careers as leaders and professionals in Family and Consumer Sciences where they use integrated and interdisciplinary approaches to improve the quality of life for individuals, families, and communities.  The program seeks to do this through education, outreach via FCS Cooperative Extension, and the development and discovery of new knowledge through research to extend this knowledge and provide service to an increasingly global community.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Our graduates will:

  • Effectively apply communication skills, both written and oral, in school, community, and workplace settings and with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use technology appropriate for a career in their Human Sciences concentration.
  • Demonstrate critical analysis skills through problem-solving activities related to Human Sciences.
  • Evaluate diverse cultural perspectives and practice cultural humility.
  • Acquire the knowledge, skills, and ethical foundation needed to pursue career options within their area of study.

The Department of Human Sciences is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.

The Didactic Program in Dietetics is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2190, Chicago, IL 60606-6995, (312) 899-4876, www.eatright.org/ACEND.
