My mother went to TSU and my father went to MTSU. I applied to 3 schools and TSU gave me the opportunity I wanted. TSU is such a diverse school, and that is the beauty of HBCUs. These schools open up so much opportunity for people who are not a part of the majority. I was also really amazed by the willingness of the professors and even other students to help students get ahead. I think the academics here are better than at any other school because the teachers are so enthusiastic to help us learn. I am a commission artist, I also do mural design and sketch design. With my degree, I want to create a business and incorporate something that I call the "Mass Arts." I want to include the music, I want the arts, I want the poetry cafes. I want to own a place where people can come record their music, rent a studio or buy out a studio. I also want to incorporate the programming of these things." – Brandon Mimms, a freshman from Nashville, TN studying E-Business with a concentration in Computer Science.

TSU actually chose me. This was the only school that denied me when I applied. Being denied made me more interested in being a student here. After figuring out why I was denied and doing all the paperwork, I was accepted to TSU. I think all that happened for a reason.

I am the first child in my family to attend an HBCU and to come to TSU. I'm not a legacy, but I am starting a legacy.

My favorit e TSU memory just happened. I got stuck in an elevator with members of my SGA administration. That did it for me, that was a good memory. 

More than anything, I am looking forward to seeing TSU grow with our academics and generally as a university at large. I like to see that student life is coming to flourish. I see so many students on campus that are happy and are doing what they are supposed to be doing. 

Being the SGA President keeps me busy but I am also involved in other organizations as well. I am in New Direction Gospel Choir; I've sat on the executive board for NSBE (National Society for Black Engineers); I was recently elected as the executive director of the National Consortium for HBCU Student Government Association Presidents.

After graduating, I plan on attending graduate school to receive my Master's in Business Administration. I would like to work a short while with a non-profit. By the time I retire, I'll have my own business." - Aarian Forman, a senior majoring in Business Administration from Danville, Illinois.

Everyone I went to elementary school, middle school, and even high school came to TSU. My aunt went to TSU, as well, which had an influence on me. Although community college is free, I wanted to go to an HBCU to learn more about my black history. 

My favorite TSU memory was during my first semester in class. My professor/advisor was a really cool teacher. He's done so many outstanding things that I cannot even imagine accomplishing that much in one life. My goal is to become a teacher. TSU homecoming is a time where people can come together. It’s a way for family and alumns to come back and see what their kid or family member is really doing. TSU homecoming is about the band, mostly the tuba section. They like the bass. TSU is special to me because of the legacy. I am a legacy. I originally committed to another school for track when I was 17. But my aunt is an alum and she told me about TSU. It grew on me. HBCUs are important so we can learn about our people and our culture. I feel like it helps us come together as a community and network. At TSU I have a 1-on-1 connection with my teachers, and that's vital. 

I met a lot of people at TSU. TSU has challenged me to eleva te myself, shout out to Mr. Lacy. Right now, I'm a part of the National Society of Black Engineers. I am the membership chair on the e-board. I'm in the process of learning the ropes and hopefully can excel in the organization. 

After graduating, I may take a different route. I've interned with different companies and would like to learn the business side to music. 

TSU homecoming is BIG! I'm excited about the whole week, there is so much to do. So much fun, parties, step show, concert, and meeting people. There are a lot of people who come to TSU homecoming. The love here at TSU is like no other HBCU. I've traveled to a lot of HBCUs and the love here, it's unique." - Willie Moore, 22, from Memphis, TN majoring in Civil Engineering.

I came to TSU because a friend and I agreed on being roommates. I am the first person to go to college in my family. My favorite memory at TSU is studying abroad. I've been to Africa and Reunion Island of the French Territory. I'm looking forward to graduating from TSU. I'm ready to start a career. I love the diversity here at TSU. Although this is a predominately black university, there is still a lot of diversity here. I didn't get a lot of diversity in Kentucky; it was strictly black and white. Plus, there are so many foreign languages spoken here, I love it. I really want to be a medical interpreter for French and Spanish speaking people. I chose TSU because my sister went here. It's a family thing. I have had a lot of good memories at TSU, I love traveling for football games. I love homecoming, I've been coming for years. It's a tradition. I chose TSU because by being black, I wanted to come an HBCU. After graduating, I want to get my Master's degree. I eventually want to become a pediatric nurse practitioner. As a junior, this has been a growing experience. TSU is a community I can gain love and support from. When working with the Division of Student Affairs, I was exposed to diversity which taught me to communicate better. The Psych department has helped me find my passion and supports my dreams. Growing up watching 'The Cosby Show' and 'A Different World' sparked my interest in HBCU’s. When it was time to apply, my college counselor would push me towards PWI’s, I went against the grain. A few things stood out to me at TSU. First, was the support from TSU alumni and students. Second is the community service. TSU encourages me to work hard and help others. I chose to come to TSU because as a child it was family tradition to attend the JMC, Homecoming and Tailgate. I was sold by the Aristocrat of Bands at homecoming when they played popular tunes from artists like Gucci Mane, Yo Gotti, and Lil Wayne. I wanted to appreciate TSU like so many of my family members did when they wore Blue at the Tailgate Parties. Its something about Old School that makes me think of Big Blue. I loved the culture of TSU long before I became a student. I believed for a long time that "I’m So Glad" originated at TSU. TSU is special because the culture here is like no other. Ive been a student here going on 3 years and a lifetime student at heart. I never imagined my best friends would be from Florida, Chicago, or Memphis. TSU has students from all over and when those creative juices come to play TSU is always #1 on the map.

I recently studied abroad in Mendoza, Argentina where I had the opportunity to learn about drones and how they are the newest technology in Agriculture. My plans after college are to use my Bachelors in Agriculture Business with USDA in the Rural Development Segment. If I choose to pursue an M.B.A I am open to other career paths. Using my degree is important to me but a lifetime goal is to give back to others because there have been so many who have helped mentor and guide me. 

I am currently planning a Community Wide Trash Clean-Up for the Northeast Nashville Community. I am inspired by Senator Thelma Harper's Annual Easter Egg Hunt. I am making this happen because so many times I have done community service and it is never in the community I live in. I believe after my first event that it will open others eyes and become a regular event or other youth can be inspired to start their own. I am aiming to have this event the 1st or 2nd week of April and it is open to everyone. Two weeks ago I was chosen to attend the 2nd HBCU@SXSW (South by Southwest) Interactive Conference in Austin, TX all-expense paid. This program Sponsors 100 HBCU Students to attend every year. It was sponsored by Snapchat, Google, Microsoft, Delta, MailChimp, BoozAllen, PwC and yeswecode. I had the opportunity to Interview with Google, Twitter, Microsoft and even got a few books to take back home." - Andrew Bryant a Junior Agriculture Business Major.

My decision to attend Tennessee State University was based primarily on the fact that the university offered Food Sciences and Technology as a major. I excelled in the sciences throughout elementary, middle, and high school and was thrilled at the various careers that would let me work with food. That coupled with receiving TSU's Academic Higher Achiever Award sealed my college attendance for what would be the next four years. As a graduating senior, I can honestly say I'm happy I made the decision to attend TSU. I have been afforded so many wonderful opportunities as a student here. From undergraduate research and internships with USDA to serving as a student leader, I feel extremely prepared to enter the professional world.
