Life in Nashville

Make Nashville Your College Home

NFL Hockey.... Minor League Baseball... Broadway Plays... From Jazz to Country

These are just some of the things you'll experience as you live in Nashville.  Nashville is the Music Capital of the USA.  Come for a visit and enjoy the sounds of Nashville!

How do you make Nashville’s diversified economy work for you? Internships, cooperative education and service learning programs at Tennessee State University provide hands-on opportunities with industries that range from health care, insurance, and banking to transportation, hospitality, entertainment, and publishing. Your efforts and experiences can lead to promising careers with local and regional employers such as Nissan North America, HCA (formerly Hospital Corporation of America), Dell Computers, Bridgestone, Gaylord Entertainment, AT&T, Bank of America, Lifeway Christian Resources Publishing, State Farm Insurance, Tyson Foods, Vought Aircraft Industries, Verizon Wireless, Regions Bank, Shoney’s, O’Charley’s Restaurants, and St. Thomas Health Services, among others.

Known as “The Athens of the South” for the nearly 20 colleges and universities in the metro Nashville area, as well as strong community support for arts and culture, the city constructed a full-scale replica of the ancient Greek Parthenon in Centennial Park off West End Avenue.

Of course, Nashville is also Music City USA, home to some of the world’s greatest musical talent in country, rock, jazz, and gospel. And you’ll find plenty of fun all year long—from the Grand Ole Opry, Ryman Auditorium and Museum, and the Country Music Hall of Fame to the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, Tennessee Performing Arts Center, and the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. Galleries, museums, comedy, concerts, theater, nightclubs. All day. Every night. All over town. Live bands even greet you at the Nashville International Airport.  And each year, Nashville hosts thousands of people downtown for the city's Fourth of July Celebration featuring top music celebrities from a number of genres.

Calling all sports fans! Cheer on TSU’s Tigers in the Gentry Center and Kean Hall on campus, as well as Tennessee Titans NFL football at LP Field, Music City Stars ABA basketball at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium, Nashville Predators NHL ice hockey in the Bridgestone Center, Sounds minor league baseball at Herschel Greer Stadium, Metros soccer in Ezell Park, and Storm NAFL football at Buster Boguskie Stadium.

Mouth-watering food in Nashville ranges from down-home southern-fried to eclectic international fare. Mary’s Old-Fashioned Bar-B-Que, Swett’s, and Harper’s soul food home cooking mix with other Nashville Originals independent restaurants as fixtures of the local culture and supporters of community initiatives and charities. From A to Z—Acorn, Fido, PM, Tin Angel, Wild Iris, Zola, and everything in between—your taste buds can party at every meal.

Put on your adventure shoes to discover and explore:

Each September, the TSU campus comes alive with the African Street Festival that celebrates the sounds of the continent. The event is free to the entire Nashville community and features daily stage shows with poetry, rap, reggae, blues, jazz, gospel, R&B, and drama, as well as vendors from around the nation offering everything African.

From college to career and beyond, whether you enjoy international cultural festivals, fashion fairs, all kinds of music, museums, theatrical performances, historical sites, celebrity watching, or outdoor activities, Nashville has everything you need for quality life experiences.
