- Ralph Cook - associate justice of the Alabama Supreme Court
- Jesse Russell - pioneer in the development of cellular telephone
- Lloyd W. Newton - 4-star general, retired as highest ranking African American in the Air Force
- S. Allen Counter - explorer and Harvard neurophysiologist
- Levi Watkins, Jr. - M.D. retired associate dean and cardiac surgeon at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine; implanted first defibrillator for the heart
- Wilma Rudolph - Ralph Boston, Wymoia Tyus, and Chandra Cheeseborough, Olympic gold medalists
- Harvey Johnson - the first African American mayor of Jackson, Mississippi
- Xernona Clayton - retired vice president for urban affairs with Turner Broadcasting/CNN and founder/CEO of the Trumpet Awards
