OMBI logo Frequently Asked Questions

As we move forward together with the One Move, Big Impact initiative, we understand that change comes with questions. This communication is designed to provide clarity, and help all faculty, staff, and students feel supported during this important transition.

1. What’s happening at Clay Hall?

Clay Hall will not be in use for the 2025–2026 academic year. Classes and offices previously located there have been thoughtfully reassigned, with most moving to the Avon Williams Off-Campus Instructional Site. A few classes have been placed in other buildings on the main campus to best support teaching and learning needs.

2. What’s next for Clay Hall?

Clay Hall will be prepared for demolition beginning this semester. Once complete, the site will be home to TSU’s future Engineering and Technology Building, a transformational project aligned with our long-term academic and infrastructure goals.

3. Why are we relocating to Avon Williams?

This move supports TSU’s commitment to responsible space utilization and compliance with Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) guidelines. It also allows us to reimagine how our spaces can better serve our academic mission. With input from the Provost, Registrar, and many academic and administrative leaders, we’ve developed a plan that promotes collaboration, innovation, and student-centered design.

4. What enhancements are happening at Avon Williams?

Avon Williams is getting a refresh! We’re creating spaces where students and faculty feel energized, supported, and connected. The GRACIE Lab (Room 200) is now open for student use. The Atrium Café is being renovated. Capital Dining (2nd Floor) has been converted into a casual student “touch-down space” for studying and collaboration.

5. What transportation will be available between campuses?

We’re committed to ensuring improved access to Avon Williams:

  • Shuttles will run regularly and align with the fall class schedule;
  • More pickup/drop-off points will be added on main campus;
  • Students can track shuttles in real time via a mobile app.

Stay tuned for additional communication regarding the shuttle service.

6. How will I find my professors and classmates at Avon Williams?

Wayfinding signage will be refreshed as needed throughout the building, helping everyone navigate with confidence. Department directories, floor maps, and staff guides will also be available.

7. Where can I eat around Avon Williams?

You have delicious options:

    • Grab snacks at the POD Market (Room 328);
    • Stay tuned for more menu specific/operating hours updates from Aramark within the Cafe Atrium;
    • Explore off-campus dining in Downtown and in Nashville Yards, all within a 15-minute walk (we’d love to hear your favorites)!

8. What if I still have questions?

We’re here to support you. Email workcontrol at tnstate.edu with the subject line “One Move, Big Impact” or call 615-963-5671 to reach Campus Operations and Planning, Design & Construction (PDC).

9. What should I do with my paper files?

Reducing paper is encouraged!

  • File cabinets have been placed in many new office spaces.
  • Work with your department’s POC to assess file storage needs.

10. Who updates the website with our new office info?

Each department’s web editor is responsible for updating office locations and contact info at tnstate.edu.

11. Who do I contact for IT needs during the transition?

Through August 29, please route all IT concerns through your department lead to Campus Operations & PDC so we can respond efficiently. After September 1, resume using standard IT support channels.

12. How do I get my new office key?

Vonetta Johnson will be onsite weekly at Avon Williams to distribute keys through the start of the semester. You may also email vjohnso at tnstate.edu to schedule a pickup time (Mon–Fri, 9:00 am–12:00 pm or 1:30–3:30 pm) at the Operations Building: 1235 Schrader Acres Blvd.

13. Can I bring my old office furniture?

Avon Williams offices are pre-furnished. If you feel a specific item is essential, please coordinate with Vonetta Johnson (vjohnso2 at tnstate.edu) before moving any furniture.

Together, we’re shaping TSU’s future. The One Move, Big Impact initiative is more than a relocation, it’s a bold step toward a more connected, innovative, and future-ready Tennessee State University. Thank you for your flexibility, teamwork, and Tiger pride!
