The Department of Dental Hygiene employs some of the best faculty members in the state of Tennessee.  We have several full-time and adjunct faculty members.  All of the full-time faculty have their Master's Degrees.  All faculty members excel in teaching and in service.

Prof. Gary-Lee A. Lewis, BS, RDH, M.Ed. 

Department Chair 



Is a native of London, England and moved to the United States in 1984. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in 1992.  Gary received his AAS degree in Dental Hygiene from Tennessee State University/Meharry Medical College in 2000.  He currently holds a Master's Degree in Education with a concentration in Educational Technology.

He became a faculty member with Tennessee State University, Department of Dental Hygiene in May of 2000 and currently teaches Clinical Dental Hygiene, Radiology and Orofacial Anatomy to first and second year dental hygiene students.  He is a member of the American Dental Hygienists' Association.  He has served in the capacity of Public Relations Chairman for the Tennessee Academy of Dental Hygiene, (TADH); 5th District Trustee for Tennessee Dental Hygiene Association, (TDHA) and Past-President for the Nashville Area Dental Hygiene Society, (NADHS).  Email:  galewis@tnstate.edu

 Janice

Prof. Janice Williams BSDH, MS

Is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Dental Hygiene where she's involved in various projects.  One includes, a Geriatric Education Grant, which allows her to conduct educational presentations to the medical and dental community regarding oral health for the elderly.  She teaches Dental Hygiene Theory (III & IV), Clinical Dental Hygiene (III & IV), to second year AAS students and Dental Hygiene Externship and Teaching Practicum to BS Degree Completion students.

 
Prof. Williams is a member of her professional organization, the American Dental Hygienists' Association, and is a Past Vice-President of the Nashville Area Dental Hygiene Society.  Email:  jwilliams128@tnstate.edu

 Word

Prof. Rosalyn Word RDH, BS, MPA

Prof. Word is a 1972 graduate of Meharry Medical College Division of Dental Hygiene, she also received a BS degree in Health Care Administration and Planning in 1980 from the same institution.  She went on to receive a Master of Public Administration in 1981 from Tennessee State University. She has been employed within the Department of Dental Hygiene since 1980 and currently serves as our Coordinator of Admissions and Advisement while teaching Clinical Dental Hygiene (I-IV) to first / second year AAS students and Curriculum Concepts in Dental Hygiene and Allied Health Education.

Prof. Gwendolyn Battiste RDH, BS, MPH

Professor Battiste is a graduate of Tennessee State University / Meharry Medical College, receiving her AAS in Dental Hygiene in 1999 and BS in 2000.  She also received her Master in Public Health in 2008 from Walden University with a concentration in Community Health Education.  Currently, she is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Dental Hygiene where she teaches Community Dental Health, and Clinical Dental Hygiene (I-IV).
 
Prof. Battiste is a current member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, Nashville Area Dental Hygiene Society, 5th District Trustee for Tennessee Dental Hygiene Association, 2012-2013 Past-President for the Baton Rouge Dental Hygienists’ Association, American Public Health Association, and Tennessee Public Health Association.  Email: gkeeton@tnstate.edu

 

Prof. Brenda Kibbel BS, RDH, M.Ed.

Prof. Kibbel is originally from Long Beach, California, where she practiced as a registered dental Assistant in expanded functions.  She received her AAS degree in Dental Hygiene from Tennessee State University/Meharry Medical College in 2000. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene from Tennessee State University in 2003.   Prof. Kibbel currently holds a Master's Degree in Education with a concentration in Educational Technology.

She became a faculty member in September of 2009. She currently teaches Dental Hygiene Theory (I & II) and Clinical Dental Hygiene (I & II) to first year students.  Prof. Kibbel is a member of the American Dental Hygienists' Association, (ADHA); Tennessee Dental Hygiene Association, (TDHA) and the Nashville Area Dental Hygiene Society, (NADHS).  Email:  bkibbel@tnstate.edu


CLINICAL FACULTY MEMBERS

 Licht

Frank Licht, RDH, BSDH, MSDH

Mr. Licht is Originally from Michigan and has been in Nashville for 11 years.  He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene from The University of Michigan in 2004.  He received his Masters Degree in Dental Hygiene Education from The University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis in May of 2015. He is currently the President of The Nashville Area Dental Hygiene Society (NADHS)

Mr. Licht has been at Tennessee State University for 3 years and is currently the Lead Clinical Supervisor for Sophomore Clinic.  His teaching and research niche is in Lasers and Periodontal Therapy.  In his spare time he sings for The Southern Ground band and travels on the weekends to entertain people around the country.  Email:  flicht@tnstate.edu

 

Leon J. Roberts II, RDH, BSDH

Mr. Roberts graduated from Tennessee State University with an AAS degree in 2004, and received his BS degree in 2006.  He became a Clinical Supervisor in 2010, and currently is the Interim Coordinator of Clinics for the Department of Dental Hygiene.  Mr. Roberts also is an instructor for the Dental Materials course and is a Certified Lab Technician.  Email: lrobert1@tnstate.edu

 

Margaret Salamon, RDH, BS

Ms. Salamon has been a dental hygienist for over 45 years.  She graduated from The State University of New York at Farmingdale with an Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene and completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene Education at Tennessee State University.

She has over 40years of clinical dental hygiene experience.  She is a member of her professional organization, The American Dental Hygienist Association and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. She has been at Tennessee State University for 12 years and is currently the coordinator of Freshman Pre-clinical Dental Hygiene Laboratory, Lead Clinical Supervisor for Freshman Clinic, and Clinic Supervisor in Sophomore Clinic and Local Anesthesia Clinical Laboratory.  Margaret is also a certified CPR instructor with the American Heart Association. msalamon@tnstate.edu

 

Tauheedah Robinson, RDH, BS

Ms. Robinson Received AAS degree in Dental Hygiene at Tennessee State University / Meharry Medical College in 2001. After practicing dental hygiene for over ten years a BS degree was earned from Siena Heights University. In 2013 I joined the faculty at Tennessee State University as a clinical instructor. trobin36@tnstate.edu

 

Dr. Charla Rainey DDS

Dr. Rainey completed her Undergraduate work at Texas State University in 1991.  She then completed her Post-graduate studies at Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry in 1995, receiving her DDS in General Dentistry.  She then practiced in community dentistry settings both nationally and internationally for 10 years while living in Texas; her practice included work with underserved populations of Native Americans, indigent children, geriatric patients, prison system, and special needs patients.  Dental Missions included Nigeria, India, Ecuador, and Mexico.

Dr. Rainey then relocated to Nashville in 2008, where she taught in Restorative, Pediatric Dentistry, and Oral Diagnosis for 3 years at Meharry Medical College, School of Dentistry before transferring to TSU in 2011 to serve as our Supervisory Dentist.  Dr. Rainey also teaches Head and Neck Anatomy, Periodontology and Anxiety & Pain Control. crainey1@tnstate.edu
