Introduction to Computing
In Catalog Course Description
This course is for non-CS majors. The
purpose is to introduce students to computer hardware and use. Topics covered
include: Computer hardware, operating system and some commonly used application software such
as a word processor, an internet browser, an email manager, a presentation
manager and a spreadsheet processor. Course
includes hands on work with computers. Not open to CS majors. It is offered
every semester.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
This course is designed to introduce
the student to the concepts of computers and to allow the student to become
familiar with the
basic computer hardware units and
operations of the computers.
Topics included are computer hardware,
computer software, word processing, spreadsheets, Internet browsers and
presentation managers.
PREREQUISITE:
High
school algebra or high school computer courses, or permission of instructor.
COMPETENCIES
STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO MASTER
A student that completes this course
successfully will have adequate knowledge about:
1. Computer
system (Hardware, Software).
2. Names
and roles of computer hardware components.
Main memory
(RAM), Secondary memories (Disk Drives),Input
and output units, Memory
organization (bits and bytes), memory size and units used to express memory
sizes (MB, GB...),Types of data
(numbers and strings of text) that can be stored in computer memory and the
fact that decimal numbers and characters are stored using the digits (0, 1) of
the binary number system ,CPU
(Central Processing Unit) and its speed
(number of pulses per second (MH, GH))
System(Mother) Board and
its main components ( Buses, Expansion slots, Connectors, Controller Cards, …)
The
computer Operating System and its
uses: Naming secondary memory units, Creating folders and files within the
secondary memories,..
3. Using
the following programs of the Microsoft Office 2007.
Excel,
Word, Power Point, Internet Explorer, and Outlook
