Equipment

Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences:

Our state-of-the-art research facilities include over 52,000 sq.ft. of laboratory and office space on the TSU main campus and the Otis L. Floyd Nursery Research Center in McMinnville, Tennessee, plus over 600 acres of field research space. In addition to the College's facilities, our students and faculty also utilize the TSU Core Facilities, a new $2 million laboratory for scanning electron microscopy, flow cytometry, proteomics, and nano-technology research.

Laboratory:

Dr Taheri laboratory is located in the first floor of Farrell-Westbrook building at Tennessee State University. It is about 900sq ft in size and is equipped with basic tools and equipment required for research in molecular genetics.

Growth Chamber:

A growth chamber (200 sq ft) is located in Dr Taheri Lab which can be used for plant tissue culture. It has 3 shelves and equipped with LED bars (LumiGrow).

Greenhouses:

Currently we have 9 greenhouses (1800sq ft each) and 8 new greenhouses are being built.

Available equipment in Dr Taheri lab:

DA 7250 NIR analyzer:

For analyzing moisture, oil, fatty acids, protein and other parameters in soybean seeds, meals and oil.

TissueLyser II:

For medium- to high-throughput sample disruption for molecular analysis. The TissueLyser II simultaneously disrupts multiple biological samples through high-speed shaking in plastic tubes with stainless steel, tungsten carbide, or glass beads. Using the appropriate adapter set, up 192 samples can be processed at the same time.

QIAcube:

The QIAcube uses advanced technology to process spin columns, enabling seamless integration of automated, low-medium throughput sample prep into the laboratory workflow. All steps in the purification procedure are fully automated.

epMotion 5070:

This system enables us to perform automatic dispensing operations required for high-throughput screenings. It is supplied with a variety of dispensing tools which can be used to dispense quantities of liquid in the volume range from 1 μL to 1000 μL.

PCR machine – BioRad C1000 Thermal Cycler

For routine PCR tasks. It is equipped with 2x48 and 1x96 well block modules

Plate reader:

The PlateReader AF2200 for quantifying biomolecules such as nucleic acids and proteins, and measuring fluorescence-based assays in a plate format.

Gas Chromatograph:

Hewlett-Packard, 6890 Series GC system equipped with flame ionization detector. This system will be used for fatty acid profiling in candidate mutants and comparison with the data generated through new protocol using HPLC approach.

Gel documentation system:

Bio-Rad ChemiDoc™ XRS+ System. Gel imaging system, includes darkroom, UV transilluminator, epi-white illumination, camera, power supply, cables, Image Lab software compatible with Windows

Equipment available in the Department:

Real-Time PCR machines

Two StepOnePlus (Lifetechnology) and one ABI prism 7900

Ion Torrent PGM sequencer

This System makes affordable, high quality next-generation sequencing accessible to researchers and microbiologists within the department. The Ion PGM™ System is

Currently being used in metagenomics studies and sequencing 16SrRNA samples.

HPLC:

Agilent 1100 series HPLC system equipped with UV detector (variable wavelength detector) and a binary gradient solvent system.

Shimadzu Prominence HPLC System equipped with UV-VIS Photo Diode Array Detector, Evaporative Light Scattering detector and a binary gradient solvent system.
