FACULTY SENATE MEETING
NOVEMBER 18, 2004
2:40 P.M.
Present: Senator William Hayslett, Presiding, Senator Adebayo Oyebade, Senator Rodney Stanley, Senator Anita Etheridge, Senator Koen Vercruysse, Senator Amir Shirkhodaie, Senator Anthony Ejiofor, Senator Deborah Burris-Kitchen, Senator Hope-Oliver, Senator Sandria Godwin, Senator Essam Hamido, Senator Thomas L. Davis, Senator Mohen Shirani, Senator Orville N. Bignall, Senator Benny Washington, Senator Jane Asamani, Senator E. I. Call to Order: Senator Hayslett called the meeting to order at 3:05 p.m.
II. Introductions: The chair acknowledged new senators. These senators include:
College of Education – Senator Essam Hamido
Guests (Student Government Association representatives did not attend)
Thanksgiving lunch was served.
III. Approval of Minutes: Senator Sanford made a motion to accept the minutes, Senator Olorunniwo seconded. Corrections were cited. Minutes were approved with stated corrections. Motion passed.
IV. Committee Reports:
Welfare and Grievance Committee - Senator Oliver reported that the committee met and discussed two (2) pending cases as follows: 1) Dr. Rajagopalan’s case will now involve interviewing him and Dr. Scheick, his supervisor. These interviews will be scheduled soon. 2) Dr. Burris-Kitchen’s complaint is currently pending a decision from the EEO Office.
Constitution Committee – Senator Asamani reported that new guidelines relative to promotion and tenure are forthcoming. Discussed the differences between satisfactory progress and satisfactory performance on the faculty evaluation. A draft of proposed changes has been submitted to Dr. Bankhead. (See separate attachments for more details)
Academic Integrity Committee – Senator Samantha Morgan-Curtis submitted information including the charge to committee members asking if they were interested in working with the Academic Integrity. Members should respond to Senator Morgan-Curtis as soon as possible.
Curriculum and Instruction Committee – Senator Al-Hadid reported on graduate and undergraduate curriculum proposals. (See attached report)
Presidential Search Subcommittee – The subcommittee convened to select and recommend presidential candidates to President Hayslett. See attachment for a brief summary of the recommended short list of candidates. The candidates recommended by the Faculty Subcommittee which was chaired by Senator Al-Hadid include:

3. Dr. Earl Yarborough Sr.
4. Dr. Raymond Winbush
5. Dr. Paul Keys
6. Dr. Jerome Green
7. Dr. Moses Newsome Jr.
8. Dr. Joseph Martin Stevenson
9. Dr. Maurice Taylor
10. Dr. Gloria Bonner
The Presidential Subcommittee further indicated that is would be desirable that the next president should be one who believes in shared governance and in a positive relationship with the Faculty Senate. The subcommittee also reported that thus far the candidates do not have credentials equal to the current president, Dr. James Hefner. It was then suggested that the Faculty Senate consider drafting a resolution to the TBR encouraging them to select a president who is at least equal to or stronger than the current president.
Dr. Samantha Morgan-Curtis made a motion that Senator Al-Hadid will assume the responsibility for preparing the letter and presenting the letter at the next Presidential Search Subcommittee meeting. Senator Stanley made a motion to accept the committee report and Senator Davis seconded. Motion passed.
The Senate meeting will be continued on Monday, November 22, 2004 at 2:00.

Senators Present: Senator Hayslett, (Presiding), Senator Finch, Senator Ejiofor, Senator Hamido, Senator Morgan-Curtis, Senator Mitchell-Oliver, Senator Samuel Dunson, Senator Stanley, Senator Bignall, Senator Vanhooser, Senator Washington, Senator Sanford, Senator Dhakal, Senator Al-Hadid, Senator Buchanan-Covington, and Senator T. Carla Newbern (Proxy for V. Matlock).
Senator Hayslett reconvened the November 18th meeting on Monday, November 22 at 2:20 p.m. Senator Al-Hadid presented the letter drafted to go to the TBR. Senators present reviewed and discussed the letter stating concerns relative to the presidential search... It was agreed that the letter will be presented to Chancellor Manning and the Presidential Search subcommittee at the next presidential search committee.
The senate discussed a means by which information /concerns could be shared and discussed with the university faculty. It was noted by President Hayslett that the chair of the Senate cannot call a faculty meeting. Only the President of the University can call a faculty meeting. Other alternative methods for obtaining faculty input will be entertained.
A motion was made and seconded to adjourn. Meeting adjourned at 2:45 p.m.
