About the Program

Preparing Students for Ecological and Environmental Research

The NSF URM Ecology and Environmental Science program in the Department of Biological Sciences at TSU will engage undergraduate students in research and academic enhancement activities to increase their knowledge in Ecology and Environmental Sciences and prepare them for graduate studies. The program will integrate:

  • year-round independent research,
  • a summer research experience at first-tier research institutions,
  • and other enrichment activities.

Student participants will involve in one of the research areas such as:

  • global change ecology,
  • wetland ecosystems,
  • microbial ecology,
  • environmental restoration,
  • and ecological modeling.

Students will participate in summer research skill training courses after their sophomore year. In the summer between their junior and senior years, students will conduct up to 8 weeks of intensive summer research at large research institute such as NSF REU sites, DOE national laboratories, and Desert Research Institute to perform ecological and environmental research with experts in the fields.

Participants will also be engaged in other enrichment activities (e.g., workshops on manuscript writing, presentation, scientific ethics course, GRE preparation, and application to graduate programs). This NSF URM program provides a unique opportunity for students to gain knowledge and to prepare for graduate study and career in Ecology and environmental Science.
