College of Agriculture, Human and Natural Sciences - Summer Apprenticeship Program

A Four-Week Residential Program for High School Rising Seniors and High School Graduates

June 4 –29, 2012
High school graduates who have applied to Tennessee State University or high school students going into their senior year are candidates for this program. Each student is assigned to a faculty- mentor from the College of Agriculture. Students are exposed to the research work of their faculty-mentor. The students are required to complete a mini-research project and present the findings at the end of the program. Group activities including lectures, demonstrations, and field trips are planned for each Friday. There is no cost.

Academic Boot Camp and Excel-O-rate Programs

June 2 - June 30, 2012


The TSU Academic Boot Camp is a rigorous four-week residential program allowing students, already admitted to TSU, to earn academic credit. Students receive quality instruction, individualized tutoring, and computer technology training. Upon completion of the program, students will have completed three (3) credit hours to apply toward their major field of study upon enrolling at TSU in the Fall.

Engineering Concepts Institute – E.C.I.

A Five-Week Residential Summer Program for
High School Graduates Majoring in an Engineering Discipline

Date: June 10 - July 13, 2012

Priority Deadline: March 1-15, 2012
Acceptance Fee Deadline: May 1, 2012
The primary objective of this program is to introduce high school graduates accepted to attend Tennessee State University in the Fall 2012 to one of the engineering majors. Students participate in enrichment and preparatory coursework in physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Students are exposed to basic scientific and engineering principals through projects, industry tours, coursework, and other experiential learning activities. At the end of the program, students should have a familiarity with engineering and the collegiate environment at Tennessee State University. All participants must complete a summer project. Scholarships are available at the end of the program to outstanding students. Cost: $100.00 E.C.I. application is available on the College of Engineering website.

CAMA: CSI/ Mock Trial Camp
One week, 5 day program for 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th graders

June 25th - June 29th, 2012

This camp will allow junior and high school students to explore the criminal justice process, the definition of crime, the mechanics of crime scene investigation and evidence collection, and the resulting procedures for arrest, prosecution, and the court process. Learning opportunities include a mock trial competition and the camp concludes with an analysis of forms of punishment. Ideal for students interested in Criminal Justice or Law. Classes meet daily M-F, 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The cost of $150/week includes lunch and snacks.

Youth Empowerment Program

A Seven-Week Commuter Program for High School Students

June 11 - July 31, 2012


The Triple Youth Empowerment Program focuses on enhancing academic achievement, increasing self-esteem, and helping youth make healthy decisions. Mentoring is a key component of this program. It is geared toward rising juniors who participate in the program at the Pearl-Cohn Entertainment Academy. This summer's program will focus on nutrition education. There is no cost.

TSU Summer Success Institute
A Five-Week Program for High School Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors and Freshmen Admitted to Tennessee State University

June 1-July 6, 2012

The Summer Success Institute is a TSU community outreach program designed to enhance students' skills in English, math, reading, test taking, and study skills. The program provides the ACT Prep Class for high school sophomores and juniors. Students are equipped with the necessary tools required to improve their ACT/SAT scores or to successfully complete their initial test-taking attempt. For graduating seniors who are being considered for admission to TSU and who have an ACT subscore of 12 or less in at least two areas, the ACT Prep provides them with the tools needed to improve their scores as a con-dition of their admission to the University. For graduating high school seniors who have been admitted to TSU with subscores of 17-13 in English, 18-13 in math, and/or 18-13 in reading, the Summer Success Institute offers the College Prep, which provides the tools needed to enhance the students' skills and improve their placement upon entry into TSU. The cost is $100.00.

Summer Math Academy

A Two-Week Residential Pre-College Program for Rising High School Sophomores and Juniors Enrolled in the Metro-politan Nashville Public Schools

July 8 - 21, 2012
The goal of the Regents Summer Math Academy is to encourage high school student participants to envision themselves as college students and to provide them with the opportunity to explore careers in mathematics, science and related science and technology fields.

The math curriculum is uniquely designed to demystify algebra and advanced mathematics, enhance attitudes toward mathematical science, and strengthen mathematical reasoning skills necessary to perform well on college entrance examinations. The curriculum is also designed to ensure that students have the neces-sary skills to perform well in college level mathematics.

Students will live on campus during the 2-week program. This is a free program.

National Summer Transportation Institute – N.S.T.I.

A Four-Week Residential Program

June 3 – June 29, 2012~~Priority Deadline: March 1-15, 2012

Acceptance Fee Deadline—May 1, 2012
High school students (in Grades 10-12) participate in enrich-ment and preparatory coursework in physics, mathematics, and computers to introduce them to the engineering discipline. Each week covers a different aspect of transportation (AIR, LAND, and SEA). Activities for summer include hands-on labs, field trips, and presentations by various employees from the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Federal Highway Administration and Metropolitan Nashville International Airport Authority. Suc-cessful completion of Algebra I is required. The program (administered by TDOT) is pending Federal Highway Admini-stration 2012 approval. The cost: NONE. N.S.T.I. application is available on the College of Engineering website.

Tennessee State Summer Boy's Basketball Camps

Two Four-Day Instructional Camps on the Fundamentals of Basket-ball for ages 6-15 ~~ June 4th-7th and June 11th-14th
These two camps will be conducted by the Tennessee State Men's Bas-ketball Staff along with players. These camps will focus on the funda-mentals of basketball from an individual standpoint along with how to play the game as a team. These camps will give young men the chance to get coaching from a Division I Basketball Program. Camps are open to boys ages 6-15. The cost for each camp is $100.

A Five-Week Residential Program for High School Graduates
In Pursuing a College Degree in a STEM Discipline

Students in this program enroll in classes in chemistry, physics, mathematics and computer science. Participants have an opportunity to engage in joint research projects with professors, learn about areas within STEM fields from guest speakers, and visit local businesses and industries that employ STEM graduates.

Pre-Engineering Program to Stimulate Interest in Engineering – P.E.P.S.I.E.

A One-Week Commuter Program for High School Students

Deadline: March 1-15, 2012 — Fee Deadline: May 1, 2012
Session I - June 4-8, 2012 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Session II - July 16-20, 2012 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The program introduces students to engineering disciplines. Students are involved in hands-on projects including product design, manufacturing, robotics, and aeronautics. All students participate in refresher instruction to promote and enhance learning skills and knowledge in mathematics and physics. Each student presents a final project. The cost: $30. TSU Lil' Tiger Camp
A Four Day Commuter Summer Football
Program for ages 6 - 14 —- June 4 - 7, 2012
The Tennessee State University Lil' Tiger Camp is designed to provide participants ages 6 - 14 with opportunities to develop and improve their football skills in a fun, safe and enjoyable atmosphere. Tennessee State University Head Coach, Rod Reed, along with his staff will be on hand to instruct campers in the fundamentals of the sport in order to help improve their football skills. TSU Lil' Tiger Camp will encourage each camper to develop new skills and achieve a new level of play and self-confidence. The cost is $135.

NASA

A One-Week Commuter Program for Students in Grades 1-8

July 16-20, 2012

The NASA SEMAA (Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace Academy) is an innovative, national project designed to increase the participation and retention of historically underrepresented youth in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The NASA SEMAA summer program utilizes a series of unique hands-on, inquiry-based classroom curriculum enhancement activities focused on NASA's research and technology in aeronautics, space exploration and science. These sessions are planned for July 16-20, 2012 from 8am-12pm daily. Applications will be accepted online at https://www.tnstate.edu/semaa/ from April 1 – May 12, 2012. There is no cost to the participants for this program.

RealSports Leadership Academy

A Four-Week Commuter Program for High School Students

June 1 - 29, 2012
The RealSports program is designed to give high school student athletes a head start in preparation for college by providing a clear vision of the expectations, knowledge and skills necessary for success. It is a four week pre-college program that provides a strong curriculum and faculty for enhancement in the basic academic subjects of English, Math, Science and Computer Science. The summer program emphasizes essential learning strategies goal setting, time and task management, critical thinking, decision making, study skills and test-taking skills including ACT preparation. Mentoring workshops presenting successful professional athletic role models, athletic administrators and coaches are significant parts of this program. RealSports promotes the personal, cultural, social and leadership development of student athletes by providing activities in the college environment that will contribute to their success. There is no cost.

A Weekend-Long Commuter Program ages 14 and Up

This program is a weekend-long interactive musical immersion for ALL guitarists, from aspiring pickers and artists to the next number-one hit songwriter. Multiple instructors will teach classes on a wide variety of topics. Simultaneous workshops geared toward different skill levels ensure there is something for everyone! Full instructor and guest artist line-up to be announced. Space is limited to 40 students.

Safari Arts Camp

COUNT Summer Academy
A Two-Week Non-Residential Collaborative Research Experience in Nuclear Science for Middle and High School Teachers, Guidance Counselors, and Student

July 16 – 27, 2012

COUNT -- Content On Understanding Nuclear Training -

Application Deadline: 6 June, 2012

The primary goals of the COUNT program are to increase the awareness of nuclear science among middle and high school physical science teachers, guidance counselors, and students; and to mentor and encourage high school students to major in mathematical sciences and/or engineering at Tennessee State University with career aspirations in nuclear science.

The program consists of training in introductory nuclear science, nuclear physics laboratory experiments, and introductory physics for the middle and high school curricula. ACT science and mathematics drills will also be done. The program content will be enhanced with the use of video capture and analysis, concept mapping in problem solving, and the PhET Network suite of simulations to enhance learning in the physical sciences.

Classes meet M-F, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Lunch will be provided for all participants.
