The Louis Stokes Mississippi Alliance for the Minority Participation’s (LSMAMP) Bridge to the Doctorate Program at Jackson State University is in the process of selecting its fourth group of Bridge to the Doctorate students to begin their studies this fall.  Qualified MAMP students who have completed their undergraduate degree and are ready to embark on their path to a doctorate should apply for this outstanding National Science Foundation sponsored program whose primary objective is to enhance the preparation of qualified students for graduate study leading to the Ph.D. in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM.) An application form and a brochure about our program are attached.

Twelve students who have participated in LSMAMP as undergraduates will be selected this year to participate in the Bridge to the Doctorate two year program. Each student will be provided a stipend of $30,000 per year. In addition, the program will pay for tuition and fees, health insurance, and travel to scientific conferences. The project’s activities are designed to ensure that the LSAMP– BD students:

·    Pursue a rigorous curriculum of graduate study leading to an MA or MS degree in a STEM discipline in 2 years.

·    Achieve competitive scores on their GRE exams to ensure acceptance into high quality Ph.D. programs.

·    Receive intense advising and the support necessary to become confident and successful graduate students.

·    Participate in significant research experiences and acquire the skills necessary to communicate the results of those experiences in the form of theses, presentations at national scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed journals.

·    Receive frequent exposure to successful scientists to build the confidence they will need to become outstanding scientists.

·    Participate in a structured program that includes special topics lectures, workshops in manuscript writing and proposal preparation, journal club, seminars, visits to research laboratories and research presentations at national meetings.

·    Are exposed to scientific work environments, e.g., the professoriate and research careers at national laboratories and other research centers.

To help find these outstanding students, the selection committee of the Mississippi LSAMP-BD program asks you to refer present and past participants in LSAMP from your program or department about this opportunity. If they have the interest, persistence and ability for competitive graduate study, please encourage them to apply.  The LSMAMP Bridge to the Doctorate program does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability, or veteran's status in its educational programs and activities or with regard to employment. An application is enclosed. Applications to participate in the 2006-2007 program must be received as soon as possible. Further information about the program is available at the following links:
