The Division of Research and Sponsored Programs (RSP) provides leadership, information and services to encourage faculty, research associates, adjunct professors, post doctoral fellows, and staff to engage in research and creative activity. The University receives awards from Federal agencies and private foundations for research, training and technical assistance. Center of Excellence in
Information Systems and Engineering Management
The mission of the Center of Excellence in Information Systems and Engineering Management (COE-ISEM) is to provide an environment conductive to and facilities in support of interdisciplinary research in selected areas of information systems. The Center consists of researchers, support staff, and students in the areas of astronomy, advanced control systems and systems identification, applied mathematics, and management information systems. Graduate and undergraduate students are drawn from computer science, physics, mathematics, and engineering curricula. The Center of Excellence for Learning Sciences
The Center of Excellence for Learning Sciences at Tennessee State University is one of the state's accomplished Centers of Excellence. Centers were established by the association of the Tennessee General Assembly in 1984 to expand research and contribute to the overall economic and community development base of the State of Tennessee. Center of Excellence for Battlefield Sensor Fusion
Tennessee State University's Center of Excellence in Battlefield Sensor Fusion is a multi-disciplinary research initiative established with the support of the U.S. Department of Defense through Army Research Office. The Center's research mission is to develop decentralized and scalable sensor data and information fusion technologies applicable to large array of distributed multiple modality smart sensors scattered randomly in the battlefield environment. Massie Chair of Excellence
The goal of the Massie Chair of Excellence Program is to assist historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and Hispanic-serving Institutions (HSIs) in producing cutting-edge minority environmental engineers. 

DOE's Office of Environmental Management sponsors the program in honor of Dr. Samuel P. Massie, the Naval Academy's first African-American professor. The Program provides for an environmental engineering professorship at nine HBCUs chosen based on their partnership with Fortune corporations in the organization AMIE (Advancing Minorities' Interest in Engineering: A Coalition of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Fortune Companies). more...

The Office of Business & Economic Research (OBER) focuses on urban business and economic development issues. Additionally, OBER conducts applied research on a  wide variety of topics related to urban development, small and minority businesses, and entrepreneurship. As a public stitution serving a major metropolitan area, Tennessee State University is committed to service and outreach.
