Study
Abroad Program
OIBP encourages TSU students to
adopt a global perspective, to become increasingly aware of
the diversity of cultures in the world and of the importance
of the global marketplace. OIBP programs aim at persuading students
to consider careers in international business or government
service. One of the most important means of achieving this objective
is the study abroad experience. OIBP seeks to provide opportunities
for TSU students to travel and study abroad, to improve their
language skills and gain familiarity with other cultures. BIE
stipends have been used to facilitate these opportunities. OIBP
encourages language majors (primarily French and Spanish) who
are also minoring in International Business to have the study
abroad experience. Wherever possible, OIBP advises students
to explore participation in the International Student Exchange
Program, of which TSU is an institutional member.
Normandy, France. Through
a linkage with Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) and
l'Universite de Caen in the Normandy Region of France, two TSU
students have participated in a study abroad program. Khadijah
Allen was the first to travel to France, in the summer of 2001.
She subsequently became the first TSU student to complete the
Minor in International Business. Renaldo Brown became the second
TSU student to travel to France, in the summer of 2002. This
program includes three weeks of intensive immersion in the French
language and a seven-week internship. It was a transformational
experience for both TSU students who have participated in it.
Several French students have also studied for a semester at
TSU.

Virgin Islands. Two TSU students
have also participated in the University of the Virgin Islands'
Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders. Sandrena Lee was
the first to go in May 2001 and Naima Davis participated in
the Summer Institute the following year. This intensive two-week
program involving students from throughout the Caribbean area
consisted of lectures, seminars, and workshops, and went on
field study tours of government institutions, commercial centers,
shipping ports and historical sites. Besides meeting students
from the region, they also were introduced to important public
figures in the Virgin Islands.

Quebec, Canada. OIBP has
become an active participant in the Mid-continent Consortium
for International Cooperation, linking Tennessee universities
with the Universite de Quebec in the city of Saguenay. OIBP
staff have attended several consortium meetings, including a
visit to Quebec. Nicolette Rougement, a French major, participated
in an intensive French language program at the University of
Quebec in the summer of 2002. This is a five-week intensive
program in which only French is spoken and students live with
a host family for a total immersion experience. With her cross-cultural
appetite having been whetted in the Quebec program, Nicolette
subsequently chose to study in France for a year.
Mazatlan, Mexico. The coordinator
of international programs at the Mazatlan Campus of the Universidad
de Monterrey system in Mexico contacted OIBP to publicize that
university's exchange programs. In the summer of 2002 Kristen
Whyly participated in Mazatlan's summer internship program,
which included private Spanish lessons, cultural immersion by
living with a host family, and an internship with a local business.
Kristen gave a fascinating account of his Mexican experience
at the September Windows onto the World which he entitled "Black
Man in a Strange World."

Bangkok, Thailand. The TSU
linkage with Siam University in Bangkok is described under international
linkages. A representative of Siam University visited the TSU
campus in the fall of 2002 to promote linkages between his university
and U.S. institutions. As a result of his visit, which involved
interviews with TSU students, two Business Information Systems
(BIS) majors in the College of Business, Renaldo Brown and Sokha
Tok, traveled to Bangkok in June 2003 for a semester of study
at Siam University. Both students are minoring in International
Business and are taking course that will contribute to their
Minor.
