I. Definition and Purpose

The Cooperative Education program is an academic support program that combines practical work experience with academic study (e.g., a parallel part-time work experience with part-time school or alternating semesters of work-study). The primary goal of the program is to undergird and enhance the theoretical knowledge of a college education with practical experience through employment in industry.

II. Required Text

Learning From Working - A Guide for Cooperative Education/Internship Students. By Joseph Barbeau, Ed.D. and William Stull, Ed.D. South-Western Publishing Co., 1990 1st edition. (See Course Calendar for details)

Students participating in their first co-op work assignment are responsible for completing all activities in Section 1 - Planning for the Experience before mid-term date.

All students are responsible for completing activities in Section 3 - Developing Your Training Program to Maximize Benefits and Section 4 - Evaluating Your Job Progress.

Students completing their last co-op work assignment are additionally required to complete activity 20, 22, 23, and 25 in Section 5 - Building for the Future

III. Course Objectives

A. To assist the student in facilitating the learning that takes place in the co-op work experience.

B. To assist the student and instructor in evaluating co- op work experience performance. By using this evaluation information and of the text book activities, a rational base can be provided for the awarding of academic credit.

C. To use the cooperative education experience as an integral part of the career development process.

IV. Modes of Learning Utilized:

A. On-the-job academic major related training.
B. Assigned text book activities.
C. Mid-term and Final employer evaluations plus student evaluation of work assignment.
D. End-of-term paper.

V. Policies on Attendance, Due Dates, and Make-up:

A. Regular attendance on the co-op work assignment is expected. Students desiring to take college courses while
on co-op work assignment must obtain prior approval from
academic department head.

B. Due dates for Mid-term and Final employer evaluations and an eight (8) page end-of-term report will be give one week after Co-op office receives of student's Work Verification Form during first week of co-op work assignment.  Mid-term employer evaluations are not required during the summer semester.
