Undergraduate Minor in Non-Profit Management & Leadership

 

The new minor in Nonprofit Management and Leadership is open to all degree-seeking, undergraduate students at Tennessee State University.  Students in majors such as Sociology, Human Performance and Sport Sciences, Communications, English, and Business are in great demand in nonprofit organizations, but the nonprofit sector can be the appropriate career fit for students in almost every major discipline.  The program director for the minor works closely with the advisors of the students interested in this minor to guarantee that all students understand the requirements of this program and to facilitate the appropriate advisement of each student.

 

Coursework designed for students seeking the minor in Nonprofit Management and Leadership covers a variety of competencies essential to the success of nonprofit organizations.  The service-learning courses are:

 

  • NPMN 2100:  Introduction to Nonprofit Organizations

 

  • NPMN 3100:  Volunteer Management/Board Development

 

  • NPMN 3500:  Fundraising and Grant Writing

 

  • NPMN 4100:  Finance and Management

 

  • NPMN 4500:  Marketing and Community Awareness

 

In addition to obtain the minor, all students must take:

 

  • NPMN 4900:  Internship in Nonprofit Management

 

For the nonprofit minor a community advisory council of fifteen individuals from local area organizations has been established to help provide a wide range of input into the program.  They will assure that TSU students are being prepared for the local job market and will help in service learning, internship, and employment placement.

 

Tennessee State University has joined with American Humanics to provide national certification for those students who are interested.  Numerous national nonprofit organizations recognize the certification as the standard to new professional employees.  Students who minor in Nonprofit Management and Leadership may choose to obtain the certification. 

 

To obtain the minor, students must

  • complete rigorous work related to nonprofit sector competencies in five service-learning courses, and
  • participate in a nonprofit internship of 300 or more hours. 

 

To qualify for certification, students must obtain the minor and additionally

  • be active in leadership in extra-curricular activities;
  • attend the American Humanics Management Institute (AHMI), an intense learning symposium; and
  • complete an undergraduate degree in the major of their choice. 

 

Tennessee State University has joined with American Humanics (AH) to provide specialized training to students who want to work in nonprofit organizations.  AH is a unique alliance that brings universities, national nonprofit organizations, and community partners together to educate, prepare, and certify professionals to strengthen and lead nonprofit organizations. 

 

The minor in Nonprofit Management and Leadership at Tennessee State University is one of over 70 programs at colleges and universities nationwide preparing undergraduates for careers with nonprofit organizations.  The AH program provides an innovative course of study that equips university students with competencies to become skilled professionals and leaders in American Humanics nonprofit organizations.  AH provides students in our program with leadership opportunities, internships, and financial aid.  Tennessee State University is one of only five colleges and universities in Tennessee to be connected to American Humanics.
