Center for Health Research The Center for Health Research at TSU was established by Dr. Baqar Husaini in 1976. The Center is almost exclusively funded by external grants from federal agencies, such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Department of Defense (DoD). An interdisciplinary team of researchers at TSU and other universities work with the Center through various research projects and collaborative arrangements. The Center has a long-standing and active relationship with the local African American and Hispanic community in addressing its health-related needs. CHR represents a thriving hub of research activity and training for faculty and students at TSU. CHR has a separate building with 11 offices, a conference room, an 18-computer network, and various data analysis packages (e.g., SPSS, SAS, STATA, LISREL, HML, NVivo). In addtion to datasets, that we have collected from our own various studies, the following secondary data sources are available at CHR: Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) for Tennessee (1996-2007); Hospital Discharge System (HDDS) for Tennessee (1997-2006); Medicare Billing Data (CMS) for Tennessee (1996-2002); including the enrollment database (EDB), inpatient, outpatient, and physician billing (carrier) files; the Death Statistical Symmary System (DSSS) for Tennessee (1996-2006); and the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent Health (AddHealth) (1995-2003).
