Overview
The tragic events of
September 11, 2001 and the subsequent use of anthrax as a weapon have
created a growing interest in all forms of terrorism, including
agroterrorism. Agroterrorism involves the act of any person knowingly or
maliciously using biological agents as weapons against the agricultural
industry and the food supply. While most people are not able to
recognize an agricultural incident, it is obvious that the agricultural
and food industries are vulnerable to terrorism and other disasters.
Catastrophic effects of bio-weapons directed against crops and animal
feed sources could easily disrupt world food supply. The institute of
agricultural and environmental research has therefore taken a
multidisciplinary approach to address issues of safety of the food
supply for the state of Tennessee and the nation. This will be achieved
in part through research and training of students, faculty, staff and
agricultural workforce issues pertaining to the safety and security of
the food supply chain.
