Childhood Hearing Loss Focus

Collaborative Program between Vanderbilt University's Department of Hearing & Speech Sciences (DHS) and Tennessee State University's Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology

This program is funded by a U.S. Department of Education training grant entitled "Interdisciplinary Personnel Preparation to Serve Infants and Young Children with Hearing Loss." Participation in the DHSS Childhood Hearing Loss Specialty offers graduate students the following program opportunities, among others:

 1. Stipend: $10,000 per academic year

 2. Travel award:  Trainees will receive funding to attend the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Annual
     Meeting.

3.  Multidisciplinary training cohort: Trainees on this track will be selected from the SLP, AuD, and MDE program at VU
    and the TSU graduate SLP program.

4.  Enhanced coursework: Trainees from all programs will take classes together in the DHSS. Click here  to see the program of study. 

5.  Extended clinical practicums:  Trainees will receive extended placements in Vanderbilt's preschool for children
    with hearing loss - the Mama Lere Hearing School, the newborn nurseries at VUMC, among others.  Placements
    at these sites will include hands-on experience in delivering hearing loss-specific services.

6.  Hearing Loss Journal Club: Trainees will participate in a monthly journal club devoted to research-to-practice guided
     readings and discussions in the area of hearing loss.

7.  Maymester: An immersive 3-week clinical placement working with children who have hearing loss.
