What we do
Developing. Renewing. Embracing. Aspiring. Men.
7 DELIVERABLES:
1. Strength Assessment
Through this program dreamers should be able to give a thorough assessment of their personal strengths.
This will be obtained through the Gallup strength finder. During the first session the dreamers will take an assessment that asked them to list their five personal strengths, and then we will see how close they are to those individuals Gallup strengths.
2. Reading Comprehension
In our efforts to push each dreamer to new heights we will encourage each dreamer to read, and read for understanding, as well as comprehension.
This will be obtained through a “Dream Read” program. In the “Dream Read” program we will give each mentor and each dreamer the same book to read and we will read the book on a weekly basis. We will open each session with a brief discussion of the book. This will encourage reading as well as intellectual discussion in the young men.
3. Public/Professional Speaking
It is important for African-American males to be able to communicate in a persuasive yet professional manner. It is vitally important that each young dream be able to sell himself for “tell his story.”
This will be obtained through a serious of workshop that will instill not only public speaking skills but professional speaking skills in the dreamers. We will be able to measure this outcome by developing a grading rubric, and through the course of the semester we will allocate three sessions to evaluate the dreamers speaking, whether it’s through 30 second commercial or impromptu topics. The objective will be to aid the dreamers in getting gradually more comfortable with delivering professional speeches and telling their story.
4. Professional Dress
As African-American males we always have to be a step about the rest, from character to performance and even appearance. We want to educate our young dreamers on the “do’s and don’ts” as it pertains to dressing in a professional environment.
This will be obtained through a series of hand outs as well as a professional dress seminar which will be conducted, by a sales representative from a men’s clothing store (i.e. Bacharach, Men’s Warehouse, Brooks Brothers, etc.).
5. Actions Vs. Aspiration
It’s no longer enough for us just to dream, we must implement some daily action that will push our dreams into reality.
This will require building a good relationship with the guys. We will talk to each dreamer about their aspirations, and come up with day to day steps that will help them effectuate their dreams. I want to make sure that their actions match their aspirations.
6. Dreams Vs. Opportunities
How you embrace your dream verses how you manage your opportunities. Understanding that there is a difference is essential. What is the difference? African-Americans have a problem with completing the process when given an opportunity to effectuate their dreams.
One or two session geared towards way to implement, effectuate and maintain opportunities for the dreamers dream.
7. Community Out Reach
Problems with African-American community deals primary with the lack of community within the community. The concept of giving back is something not talked about, nor taught or is it something that is publicized on television. Creating opportunities for the younger generation is a way to aid the downtrodden of African-American males.
