Student Achievement

Performance Measures

Tennessee State University (TSU) measures its performance, including student progress, based on the five key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of the University's Strategic Plan

The first four KPIs listed above, specifically address the University's student achievement goals. Charted below are the data collected highlighting student achievement and success.

Measures for the Access and Diversity indicator include the following: growth in enrollment, distance education, and underserved population groups as outlined in the Strategic Plan. Overall Tennessee State University has maintained steady progress in meeting the Access and Diversity goal.  Total enrollment at the University has remained consistent. The number of undergraduate students choosing to major in Health Care and STEM disciplines has increased steadily. TSU continues to reach more students through distance education programs.

Banner Business Friendly

The Business-Friendly Practices indicator relates to the following: improvements in user satisfaction regarding the University’s core business and educational functions where “user” is defined as students, alumni, employees, and external constituents. The charts below reflect student satisfaction results from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). The results are displayed as the percentage of students responding to having participated in activities pertaining to NSSE item as compared to Tennessee State University’s Peer Institutions which include Southeastern Public Universities, Carnegie Engaged Institutions and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Overall, TSU compares favorably to its selective peers in the areas of Active and Collaborative Learning, Student-Faculty Interaction, and Enriching Educational Experience.

Note: Starting in 2013, NSSE changed the format of the survey by adding questions and categories, making longitudinal comparisons difficult. Yet, the comparisons between TSU and its peers in each year are still meaningful.

Engagement relates to the University’s involvement in community service, the number of TSU students participating in study abroad opportunities, and the number of international students enrolled at the Institution. The international student population continues to increase. In 2015, more TSU students spent hours in community service. The number of students engaged in community service nearly doubled. TSU and its students are engaged locally and in the global community.
