Student Development

OIBP staff are deligent in assisting students in developing their personal plans to achieve their career goals and aspirations. Our focus is to
  • Counsel students and assist them with career goals, resume refinement, internship placements, interview preparation and job procurement.
  • Communicate with prospective employers and analyze the job market - where the jobs are qualifications needed and the compensation that is offered.
  • Plan and implement career related workshops and seminars.
  • Expedite job interviews for students on and off campus for full-time employment and internships

Students receive assistance with credential and resume development, job search and interview strategies. Students are advised regarding career options, part time employment, and job placement. They obtain assistance with graduate application packets and with personal essays that are needed for the application process. Faculty members take advantage of the services of this office by inviting the Assistant Director for Student Placement into their classrooms for workshop presentations. Counseling is a significant component of the services provided in that students need a safe environment in which to share life experiences and goals and to explore alternatives.

Recruiters schedule on-campus interviews and information sessions through the office. Students are notified via memos, assignment in classes, postings on bulletin boards around the COB, and individual contacts. Often recruiters pre-select students before the student is placed on the interview schedule. Information sessions have become more utilized as a means for students to self-screen. Lists of recruiters are maintained on an Excel spreadsheet. The MonsterTRAK.com package that has been recently initiated by the Career Center, will make this process more efficient starting with the Fall 2002 semester.

The Internship Program is under constant upgrading. The internship course requirements have been placed on the College of Business website. A PowerPoint presentation is required of each student at the closing of the semester and is presented before peers, faculty/staff, and host organization supervisors. This has been a very successful tool for all students to benefit from each other’s experiences.

In order to more systematically determine students’ plans upon graduation, e.g. employment and graduate school, a form has been devised that is disseminated through the MG 450 course, Business Strategy and Policy. This course was selected as it is one of the last courses taken prior to graduation and is a requirement for graduation.

Other pertinent activities include the Career Fair at TSU in the fall and at the Fairgrounds in the spring; membership in the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce Workers Recruitment Committee which targets college recruitment for Nashville area businesses; membership in the World Trade Council with a booth at the Annual Ports and Flags event; membership in the Nashville and Brentwood Chambers of Commerce; membership in NAFSA – Association for International Educators; and membership in Southern Association of Colleges and Employers (SACE) and Tennessee Association of Colleges and Employers (TACE).

The major activities in support of student development include: Minor in International Business, Internships, Study Abroad, and The Multicultural Friendship Society.
