What is it?

Interlibrary loan or ILL is a service which allows you to obtain materials NOT available at TSU Libraries.

Who is eligible?

We encourage our patrons to exhaust ALL resources available at TSU before submitting an ILL request due to the length of time it may take to borrow material.

What can you order?

Are there any restrictions?

Many libraries will not lend:  Audio-visual materials; Reference or Reserve Books; Rare and Valuable Manuscripts and Books which would be difficult or impossible to replace; and popular materials in high demand at the lending institution.

How long does it take?

Items usually take on average about 7-14 days to arrive at the Brown-Daniel Library.  However, if several libraries have to be contacted before an available copy may be located, the process may take longer.

How much does it cost?

We try, whenever possible, to obtain materials from other Tennessee libraries or out-of state libraries which do not charge fees for their services.  However, if there are costs involved in obtaining materials, we will notify you in advance so that you may decide whether or not you want to pay for the item.

If I like a book I've ordered through ILL, may I pay for it and keep it?

Just like you may not pay for and keep a book that you borrow from our library, you may NOT pay for and keep a book that we borrow from another library.  However, if you would like to see our library have a copy of the book in our holdings, you may request that we purchase the book for our holdings by contacting our Collection Development Librarian, Ms. Glenda Alvin at galvin@tnstate.edu, or by calling (615) 963-5230.

How will I be notified?

It is the patron's responsibility to check with Mrs. Barbara Van Hooser in the Reference Department on the second floor between the hours of 8:00-4:30 Monday and Tuesday; 11:30-8:00 Wednesday; and 8:00-4:30 Thursday and Friday to determine if requested materials have arrived.  Mrs. Van Hooser may reached at the following telephone number: (615) 963-5206 or the following e-mail address:  bvanhooser@tnstate.edu. On Wednesday and Thursday nights and on weekends, you may contact Mrs. Nancy Henthorne, Reference Librarian at 963-5201 or via electronic mail at nhenthorne@tnstate.edu. Should you need to inquire about delivery at any other time, you may contact the Reference staff on the second floor and they will be happy to assist you.

Where do I pick up ILL materials?

You may pick up ILL materials in the Interlibrary Loan office located in the Reference Department on the second floor of the Brown-Daniel Library.

Where do I return ILL materials?

Return all materials (except for photocopied articles, which are yours to keep) to the Interlibrary Loan office located in the Reference Department on the second floor of the Brown-Daniel Library.

Please do not under any circumstances return materials borrowed through Interlibrary Loan to the circulation desk or drop them in a book drop!

When do I bring ILL materials back?

In most cases, when you pick up your materials, you should notice a paper band around your items.  Do not remove this band.  This band contains the due date for your item, as well as other very important information.  Lending policies depend on the institution that we borrow from. Loan periods vary from as little as ten days to as long as a month.  Should you need the item longer, we can try to renew it for you.

Please return all ILL materials on time!

If you don't return your materials on time, you are helping to damage the Tennessee State University Library's reputation with other libraries.  Other libraries could decide that our patrons are unreliable, so they won't loan us anything in the future.  In addition, we can have a hold placed on your University account, so that you won't be able to receive your grades or graduate.

Are ILL materials renewable?

Whether or not you can renew your ILL materials depends on the library we borrowed them from.  Should you need the item past the due date, please contact Mrs. Barbara Van Hooser in the Interlibrary Loan Office at (615) 963-5206, and she will contact the lending library in order to determine whether or not they will renew the item for you.  There is no guarantee that you will be able to renew everything you obtain through Interlibrary Loan, but Mrs. Van Hooser will do her best to see that your renewal request is granted.

What if I lose or damage an Interlibrary Loan book?

If that happens, it is your responsibility to pay for the lost or damaged item at the replacement price set by the lending library.  Plus, you will also have to pay for any overdue fines which may have accumulated.  Failure to pay for lost and/or damaged items will result in a hold being placed on your University account.

If I lose the cover slip or band from my ILL book, how do I return the book?

First of all, don't take the cover slip or band off the book you've borrowed through interlibrary loan.  Doing that is a good way to get it mixed up with our books that you return to the circulation desk.  In addition, the cover slip provides Mrs. Van Hooser with important information concerning the book that we are returning to the institution.  In the event that you do lose the cover slip or band from your ILL book, please bring the ILL book to Mrs. Van Hooser's office on the second floor of the Brown-Daniel Library.  As always, please do not under any circumstances return materials borrowed through Interlibrary Loan to the circulation desk or drop  them in a book drop, as it would be very easy to get ILL books mixed up with books we have in our holdings.

Alternatives to ILL

Before initiating an interlibrary loan request, please check our online catalog or our online databases to make sure we don't have the book or the article in full text.  For those wishing to order dissertations or theses, the Brown-Daniel Library has access to full text dissertations published since 1997.  In addition, we also have full text access to dissertations published at Tennessee State University since 1996.  Please keep in mind that we will NOT process requests for items which may accessed from the Brown-Daniel Library.  Should you need any assistance on determining whether or not the library has access to a particular item, please check with a staff or faculty member in the Reference Department who will be happy to assist you.

Any further questions?

Should you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact Mrs. Barbara Van Hooser at (615) 963-5206 or bvanhooser@tnstate.edu.
