Traci Lemons, BA '05

When I started at Tennessee State in the Fall of 2000, I was a business major. I thought I wanted to become a CEO of a Fortune 500 company one day. I quickly realized that the business realm was not my forte and I changed my major to English in the Fall of 2003. I started to quickly excel in my English classes and found a passion for literature.

My favorite teachers and classes were Ms. Parham's African-American Literature class and Dr. Morgan-Curtis' Literary Critisim class. These teachers had a great influence on my success and learning.

In the summer of 2007, I moved back to my hometown of Memphis, TN, and I am currently an English and Creative Writng Teacher at Trezevant High School. I absolutely adore teaching! No day is ever the same and I wake up every morning with a passion to educate children.

The English Department at TSU provided me with a foundation and skills to pass on to my students. Though it is often times an obstacle to motivate these kids to reach for a goal and look beyond the "now," I welcome this challenge everyday. In the society we live in, education is key to any and everything. As I tell my students, "It's all or nothing, sink or swim!"

Ashley Northington, BA '05

Ashley is currently the Education Reporter for the Times newspaper in Shreveport, LA. She covers Caddo and Bossier Parish k-12 schools, LSU-Shreveport, and Southern University. Ashley has covered national news such as the Jena Six rally for justice. Ashley plans to write stories about race and class issues, and how these two issues affect education.

"I do get to use my minor in women's studies often. Since a lot of my minor and several of my English classes dealt with race and class issues, I tend to write a lot of stories about how these topics affect education. I recently wrote an article about the yearly release of test scores, but I focused on how the kids from disadvantaged backgrounds--both black and white (most folks think only black students perform horribly on standardized tests--not true)--scored poorly and why. I'm currently working on a race project with two other reporters. The stories I plan to contribute to the project deal with the resegregation of schools, why students self segregate and how selective or magnet schools create one-race schools."
