Dr.Sandra Govan, Professor of English at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, is a scholar of African-American literature. She will discuss the novel selected as the common reader for freshmen: Parable of the Sower, by Octavia Butler.

Novelist - Sybil Baker - Friday, March 27

UT-Chattanooga professor and novelist Sybil Baker will visit Tennessee State on Friday, March 27 to promote her first novel, The Life Plan.  She will read from her work in the LLP Department Lounge at 11:30 am.  She will also discuss creative writing and publishing with Dr. Elaine Phillips' creative writing class from 12:40-1:35.

Join faculty and students in discussions of research projects. Bring a project to discuss or come to hear what others are doing. 

At the November forum, faculty and a graduate student discussed via negativa, medieval drama in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, perceptual dialectology and youth language in France, and citations in technical communication journals. We continued our discussion at the December meeting and also talked about web resources such as concordances, www.LibraryThing.com, and more. The group also discussed developing a presentation on MLA documentation using Captivate (software that combines PowerPoint, audio, and quizzes) .

Book Club - Discusses Cormac McCarthy's The Road

Join the Alpha Alpha Eta chapter of Sigma Tau Delta & the TSU Library Book Club as they discuss Cormac McCarthy's The Road.

This Opraha's book club pick has been made into a major motion picture set to be released in 2009. Regarded by many critics and readers as one the best novels of the last 25 years, this tale of post-Apocalyptic survival focuses on the relationship of a father and son trying to maintain their lives and their humanity! Light refreshments provided as we discuss this novel's moral, political, and literary messages!

Come celebrate Halloween as Sigma Tau Delta, presents Tennessee State University Teacher of the Year Dr. Samantha Morgan-Curtis. She will present Stephanie Meyer: Putting the Bite Back in Classic Literature.

Dr. Morgan-Curtis talk is a feminist cultural analysis of Stephenie Meyer's wildly popular Twilight book series and she will be taking questions from the audience afterward. Prom/holiday attire is optional. This event will be in LCVA 117, 10-10:50 a.m., at Belmont University.

The ceremony was beautifully conducted by our current chapter officers: President Evelyn J. Moody, Vice-President David Houston, and Secretary Jaimee Randolph-Dunn.

The officers for the 2008-2009 year were also elected: Whitney Fox for president, Brittany Nestor for vice-president, and Danisha Banks for secretary/treasurer.

The Alpha Alpha Eta Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta invites English majors and minors to meet November 14 and November 15 in 103 Humanities at 3:00 pm for a Friends of Sigma Tau Delta meeting.


ENGLISH MAJORS Thursday, November 8 -- 8:00 - 9:40 am, 103 HUM (light refreshments)

Discussion Session. Come for all or part of the session to meet with the department self-study committee. Talk about student concerns and help the committee develop a plan for improvement.


ENGLISH MAJORS:  Literature surveys/overviews will be presented for 50 to 55 minutes by faculty at 8:10 or 15 on Tuesday (10/30), Thursday (11/1) and Tuesday (11/6) in Room 201 of the Humanities Building. Students majoring in English and planning to take any of the subject-related Standardized Test are invited to attend.
