Michael A. Freeman, Ph.D
Vice President for Student Affairs
Michael A. Freeman is a Chicago native and serves as Vice President of Student Affairs at Tennessee State University. Dr. Freeman earned an undergraduate degree in Psychology and Sociology, and M.A. degree in Counseling and Student Development at the University of Iowa; and the Ph.D in Counseling and Personnel Services at the University of Maryland at College Park. He completed the Management Development Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and finished Class Valedictorian of Leadership Maryland in 2003.
With over 25 years of experience in higher education administration, Dr. Freeman previously held positions of Senior Academic Advisor in the College of Arts and Science at the Johns Hopkins University, Director of Residence Life and, Director of Minority Affairs at St. Mary's College of Maryland; and as Academic Counselor in the office of Special Support Services at the University of Iowa.
In addition, Dr. Freeman taught undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department of Counseling and Personnel Services at Maryland and has consulted with Maryland area educational institutions such as Upward Bound Programs, Loyola College of Maryland, the Alaska Student Affairs Conference, Prince George Community College, and Bowie State University. He is a member of the Middle States Region Accrediting Association and a graduate of Leadership Maryland. Dr. Freeman is published in The Handbook of Student Affairs Administration, The Black Students Guide to College Success, and Managing Liabilities and Overseas Programs.
Dr. Freeman is active in NASPA and ACPA (student affairs professional associations); he was a member of the NASPA Journal editorial board for six years; Dr. Freeman has been a national board member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., a member of the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross, St. Mary’s County Chapter, Walden-Sierra, Inc., Teen Court Judge for St. Mary’s County, Maryland, The Richard H. Freeland Scholarship Board, and serves on the Diocese of Washington St. Mary’s County Scholarship Committee. He credits his successes to the grace of God, family and friends, and most importantly the encouragement of his mother, Sandra Freeman-Funderburg.
