For more information on declaring a major and curriculum planning for specific programs, please refer to the Academic Advisement section of this site.

Bachelor of Arts in History

TSU's undergraduate major in history is an intellectually challenging and enriching program that prepares students for a wide range of career choices (see the American Historical Association's career guide for more information). The B.A. in history requires 120 hours including the General Education Core, world history, world geography, a foreign language, and twenty-seven upper-level hours in history.

Bachelor of Science in Political Science

The major in political science prepares students for careers in teaching, government service, and business as well as law school and other graduate programs by teaching critical thinking and effective communication. The B.S. in political science requires 120 hours including the General Education Core, four introductory courses, and twenty-seven upper-level hours in political science.

Minors in History, Geography, and Political Science

The department's minors in history, geography, and political science are open to students in all undergraduate majors in the university. Minors enrich major programs and allow students to expand their qualifications beyond a single academic discipline. Minors in history, geography, and political science, each comprising eighteen hours, require specific introductory courses but otherwise allow students great flexibility in selecting courses compatible with their major programs or individual academic goals.

Teaching Licensure in History, Geography, and Government

Students majoring in history or political science may pursue teaching licensure for grades 7-12 in history, geography, and/or government. In addition to requirements for the history or political science major, the teaching licensure curriculum includes a series of professional education courses culiminating in a student teaching internship during the second semester of the senior year. The department also supports additional endorsements in history, geography, and government for teachers licensed in other fields.
