Data from the USDA’s Economic Research Service shows that the Greenhouse and Nursery industry accounted for approximately $15.6 billion in grower sales receipts in 2004. Between 2000 and 2004 grower sales receipt showed an overall increase of almost 14% with propogative material and herbaceous perennials registering the greatest increase, 59% and 58% respectively. The demand for nursery products is driven by a number of forces including 1) growth in population, 2) urbanization, 3) increase in income of households and 4) housing construction. In terms of import and export the overall United States agricultural export continues to surpass imports by a large margin while the opposite trend is observed regarding nursery products. In addition to published data a mail survey was used to acquire feedback from 25 businesses in different states exporting nursery products. Results show that the leading products exported were: - 1) woody ornamentals, 2) bare-rooted trees, caladium bulbs and daylilies hosta, 3) seedlings and 4) potted flowering plants. In terms of business arrangements exporters used 1) direct retailers, 2) contracts with others in the importing countries, 3) contract with others domestically and 4) their own export company. Exporters indicated that factors affecting U.S. nursery export are:- 1) restrictions to markets due to Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) regulations aimed at controlling pests and diseases, 2) limited knowledge of trade legislation and/or political considerations in the importing countries, 3) international transport logistics including freight coordination and insurance liability, 4) poor guidance concerning assistance with export questions and 5) absence of coordinated firm oriented trade services network.
