Dr. Nick
Gawel joined the Tennessee State University Cooperative Agricultural
Research Program in 1994 as an Associate Investigator in Plant Breeding.
In 1997, he was named Director of the Tennessee State University Nursery
Research Center in McMinnville, TN. Following the restructuring of CARP
in 2003, he became Assistant Dean of the Institute of Agricultural and
Environmental Research and Superintendent of the Nursery Research
Center. Dr. Gawel’s role within the Institute is to oversee the
operation and research activities of the NRC and to assist in the
administration of the Institute.
A native of
Detroit Michigan, Dr. Gawel earned his B.S. in Crop Science from
Michigan State University and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Plant Breeding
from Texas Tech University. Dr. Gawel has completed post doctoral
research appointments with USDA/ARS in Griffin GA and Phoenix AZ. His
area of research specialty is the application of molecular markers in
plant and insect taxonomy.
