TSU Welcomes Dr. Wendell S. Fortson to the 39th Annual University-Wide Research Symposium

Dr. Wendell S. Fortson opened the 39th Annual University-Wide Research Symposium with his moving story of purpose, tragic loss, and reinvigorating dreams.  Dr. Fortson credited Tennessee State University and faculty with helping him identify his purpose in life, cancer research.  Fortson's sister tragically succumbed to cancer while he was finishing his graduate degree and just a few months after having her third child.  Such a personal tragedy and loss reinvigorated his pursuit of his goals and purpose in life.

Dr. Fortson also noted that the purpose he accepted at TSU perpetuated a history of dreams, research, and advancements built by TSU Alumni, faculty, and staff, and spoke to the historical challenges of HBCUs.  Fortson felt the significance of those who fought and died for his freedom and equality, and achieving his dreams became an obligation to those who went before.

Dr. Fortson's keynote speech inspired a new generation of HBCU students, faculty, and staff to continue their research goals and follow their dreams.
