FACTS - Tennessee State University

TSU is a comprehensive, urban, coeducational land-grant university founded in 1912.  The 450-acre main campus with more than 65                     buildings      is located in a residential setting.

                           

ACCREDITATION:  Tennessee State University is accredited to award the associate, bachelors,  masters, specialist  in education, and doctoral degrees by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

 

HISTORY:  Organized as the Agricultural and Industrial State Normal School  in 1909; began serving students on June 19, 1912; raised to the status of a four-year teachers’ college in 1922; elevated to full-fledged land-grant university status by the Tennessee Board of Education in 1958.

 

LOCATION:  Nashville, the state capital and second largest city in Tennessee, has a population of 565,352 and is a thriving center of government, business, industry, and education.   It  is also considered  the hub of the nation’s country music industry.

 

PRINCIPLE DEGREES:  Tennessee State University offers 44 baccalaureate degrees and 26 masters degrees, as well as the two-year Associate of Science degree in Nursing and Dental Hygiene,   the doctoral degree in Public Administration, Administration and Supervision, Biology, Computer Information Systems Engineering, Curriculum and Instruction,  and  Psychology.

FACULTY:  462 full-time and part-time of whom approximately 70 percent hold doctoral degrees.

ENROLLMENT 2005-2006:  8,800 students (undergraduate and graduate)   representing 46 states and 55 countries.
